President Donald Trump has filed for an extension on his 2016 tax return, a White House official said Saturday.
The official did not provide information on when Trump sought the extension or why. The official was not authorized to discuss the presidents taxes and insisted on anonymity.
Tax Day this year was on April 18. The Internal Revenue Service allows individuals and businesses to apply for a six-month extension to get more time to file a return. An extension does not provide more time to pay taxes.

It is very common and it is legal. Many people file an extension.
The earlier you file the earlier you get on the audit list.
Sounds to me like President Trump is putting this out there for media consumption. He’ll have something up his sleeve. King of Troll.
That’s what I said.
Extensions are normal for business people and investors with K-1 documents. Many of the K-1’s do not come out until after the April filing deadline. The partnership return extension deadline is Sept 15.
I was agreeing with you. ;-)
Absolutely right.
You file a Form 4868, which is a very short form, to get the extension. While in some states you get an automatic extension, so far as I know you still have to send in the 4868 to stay on the good side of the IRS.
I did, too.
Lock me up???
I imagine his taxes were extremely complicated, and much more so when he switched over to the White House.

That didn’t happen until January. The extension is for the 2016 taxes.
No end to the flailing they will do - they seem to think that if they keep digging in the manure piles they have shoveled, they will find a pony that was never there kin the first place.
Ok thought so.
What I meant is that he had to sell, transfer, put into trust, give away, and so forth, numerous hotels, golf courses, houses, foreign possessions, and other stuff, and that had to be done before he became President. Mostly in 2016.
