Anyone have trouble with MRIs being too confining? I couldn't get through my first one....but, today, used Klonopin and a lavender washcloth to cover my eyes and breathed in the aroma. Worked great. No panic.

Have upper back pain I needed diagnosed.

What are your tips and tricks?

Is a lavender washcloth called that because of the color or fragrance?

I just laid there and enjoyed the electronic massage.

Is that the test which makes all the weird noises? I tried to find rhythmic patterns and toward the end of the t test, I even began to discern musical chords.

MRIs are uncommonly unpleasant. I’ve had one or two and really had to resist the panic.

I survived just focusing on breathing. . Didn’t think about taking an anti-anxiety med. Would definitely try it should I ever need another MRI.

They have open MRIs. The sides are open. Not as confining.

Other then that...drugs.

No, I wet a washcloth and put several drops of lavender on it. Then stored in a ziplock. Covered my eyed totally and breathed in the relaxing scent.

Don’t care about the confinement, but the noise gets me. (Solution: loud music in headphones)

A local outfit advertises an ‘open sided MRI’.

Yes, everyone I know who has been stuck in a closed MRI freaks a little (me, a LOT).

First off, see if you can get an open MRI — the closed ones are being phased out for just that reason.

I selected music I like and closed my eyes and wrote code in my mind. Every line. Then I debugged it.

When I was done, the module just had to be typed in.

You need to be ready with a project or something to COMPLETELY engage your brain.

But I had a friend who panicked and kept screaming to be let out.

They are horrible machines to be in.

They offered me some type of tranquilizer, but I didn't take it. I kept my eyes closed through out the MRI. They gave me a headset and played music, but the music was drowned out by the pinging.

The bigger problem is that you get a huge dose of radiation, which destroys bones/immune system etc.

Nascent iodine helps get rid of it. Drink lots of pure, non fluoridated water.

I tried to do it without drugs and lasted perhaps ten seconds.

I went back to my doctor, got a few pills and went for a second try. I took the dose plus more (”one for the pot”) of something that ended in “pam” I think.

The place I had it done had a headphone setup where they could speak to you. When they were not speaking, they played music from a CD I brought with me.

I made sure the drugs kicked in and after a quick glance kept my eyes closed and went off to a happy place.

There are some very claustrophobic MRI machines out there. Too much for me.

But they now have “Open MRI” machines, Do a google search and look at the images and you will see what I mean. They look OK to claustrophobic me.

find a facility with an open MRI machine. Tell your doctor that you are claustrophobic and they will help you. I have a the same problems, big guys & small machines don’t mix. If there is not an open machine near you, there is always XANAX...just sleep thru it......paul

Ooops, got it confused with a CT scan.

There is no radiation in MRI’s...

I always get through unpleasantness like an MRI by telling myself prior to the procedure to suck it up, cooperate and it will be over quick.
