The 10 Best Fictional Battles
Popular Mechanics ^ | May 29, 2017 | Joe Pappalardo

Endless internet lists examine the most accurate Hollywood battle depictions, ones that adhere to the actual battles they portray. The verdicts are unforgiving, measured with sympathy for filmmakers who bend the truth to tell a story. But what about when moviemakers can craft an entire battle from scratch?

Fictional battles created with realism, logic, and intelligence are hard to come by. The absurd military vehicles and small unit tactics of The Empire Strikes Back are even dumber to behold than the lack of armor on the Spartans of 300. Because of these accurate battles are such a rarity, they deserve a list all their own.

“Battle of The Pelennor Fields “

Totally Agree

With the Battle of the Hornberg, Five Armies, and the Battle of the Dargolad (wish he had given us more details...but, that’s the charm of the whole series, leave you wanting more)

ANY battle from ‘Starship Troopers’

Gotta go with US Marines vs. Aliens in Battle: Las Angeles.

One squad of Marines, plus civilian refugees, turns the tide of the whole battle with an attack on the Aliens' communications.

Don't know about historical accuracy and tactics, but the movie's a rarity in today's times - actually pro-US military. Worth seeing for that reason alone.

To: SkyPilot; Vendome

Have to agree with SkyPilot here.

Master and Commander is superb; a truly great movie in all respects.

My favorite movie of all time, btw.

The Coat-hanger Scene from Birdemic. It has it all: small-unit tactics, movement, fearsome weaponry, and a wily and agile opponent.

Yes, this was a real movie.

300 wasn’t trying to replicate history, it was replicating historical storytelling. Greeks were really fond of the Heroic Nude, good guys, including Spartans, were generally depicted mostly naked. The central conceit of the movie is taking Greek paintings and statuary and turning into film.

If Little Beaver had pressed King Kong Bundy, that’d be about the same as Hogan pressing Andre.

Personally I like the battle for Valencia in EL CID,
The battle against the Persians in THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE, Spartacus.
The Battle of the Bulge (1965), almost total fiction.
Battles against pirates old movies from 1935-1965.
Captain Blood
The Sea Hawk
Caribbean (1953)
The Black Swan
And who could forget the fictionalizing of 55 days at Peking.
Then there is the battle for Montezuma’s Castle in FLAMING FEATHER.

The opening battle scene in Gladiator is awesome. I also like the battle scene of Agincourt including the collection of soldiers after the battle in Henry V, Zulu and the final battle scene in We Were Soldiers.
