A Denver sportswriter is out of his job after triggering an onslaught of criticism for tweeting that a Japanese driver winning Sunday's Indianapolis 500 made him "uncomfortable."
Terry Frei, a sports reporter for the Denver Post, sent the questionable tweet shortly after Japanese race car driver Takuma Sato hailed victory in the illustrious Indy 500.
"Nothing specifically personal, but I am very uncomfortable with a Japanese driver winning the Indianapolis 500 during Memorial Day weekend," he wrote.

The Boxer rebellion fifty years later with the rescue of the foreign legations and pacification of the Boxers by the allied force, anchored by the Japanese, might factor in there. It would be a great setting for an alternate fiction book.
Painting of Western and Japanese troops
“The Japanese are some of the most racist people I have ever met. There is a legendary Japanese motorsport called Drifting. Right now, most of the field is Japanese but there are a few Americans who are at the top of the field as well.
You should hear what they have to say about that. Screw the japanese. Put your Hello Kitty briefcase down, pull down your authentic vending-machine girls panties and squat to use the toilet because both sides of this story need to be told.
Listening to these androgynous showboats talk about Gaijin invading their sport while chain smoking Marlboros and shopping for $40 hairproducts and smoker-toothpastes. Feh. Who needs em.”
Sounds like YOU have some racist issues . Squat toilets lol ! Highest tech toilets in the world made in Japan . Hello Kitty almost as popular in the US these days as in Japan lol ! Panty machines were used by a super ultra tiny % of pervs in Japan .
And if he is over 90 years old, he may be responsible for that. If he isn’t, he is as guilty of war atrocities as any white southerner today is for slavery.
Agreed.
Dopey. The best in the world came to Indianapolis. Says more about the event than any sports weenie.
So, you have never even heard of Mario Andretti? He was born in Italy.
The Andretti family left Montona in 1948, during the Istrian exodus, ending up in a refugee camp in Lucca, Italy.[8] They emigrated to the United States of America in 1955, settling in Nazareth in Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley with just $125 to their name.[4] Andretti became a naturalized United States citizen in 1964.He won the Indy500 in 1969.
I'm not a sports fan but I appreciate individuals that transcend their meager beginnings and become iconic examples of success.
That reminds of Takuma Sato's future prospects.
I do have an issue ! Check this out.
I’m an American. I have lineage throughout Europe, with a big chunk in England and Germany.
But I’m an American.
I know a TON of Japanese people. They are Americans. Their slanted eyes make them no less American than my love of boiled chicken and sausages.
But the people who are actually from other countries, who behave as they do in those countries - Are inferior. Why ? Because America is superior. America is the best country in the world, and it’s people are the best too. Civilized, thoughtful and morally pointed describe my countrymen pretty well.
Lets take a look at Indians. India is a hellhole. It’s an utter pit of vile disgust and grossness. From government, to sports, to language, to food to .. well.. everything. If the earth needed an enema the tube would go right in India.
But in America Indians come and adopt American lifestyles, and embrace American cultures. They become Americans. And everyone goes up a notch.
Get what I’m saying ?
” legendary Japanese motorsport called Drifting.”
“Drifting” has been around for a very long time. Guys used the drift technique to go around corners when racing cars in the Fifties and Sixties. I used to drift my gokart in 1960. Kept the rpms up for getting out of the corner faster. Not really needed much after ground effects spoilers and wings came into use. The Japanese learned it fro the European and American racers.
Anyway, I am just getting old or does anybody else remember the Japanese Speed Racer cartoon from the 1960s? I used to watch this as a kid. This was of course Japanese animation and Speed Racer was an Americanized name. Over in Japan, the race car driver was named Go Mifune.
These Democrats have audacity. But of course they are excluded.
“Driving while Asian”
One of the reasons that a lot of Asians aren’t very good drivers is that they weren’t brought up in cars, whereas we are in cars from the time we are babies, and are very relaxed and comfortable in cars.
He’s on his own side now....fired. Dummy
“America is superior. America is the best country in the world, and its people are the best too. Civilized, thoughtful and morally pointed describe my countrymen pretty well.”
Superior in some ways , inferior in others . Best ? Many people in Switzerland , Canada and several other countries would say they same thing about theirs . Best people ? Some are and some are not . Civilized ? I can tell you several ways the Japanese , for example , are more civilized . Waste of time comparing . Most Western nations and their people have strong/good points and weak/bad points . Nobody is the “ best “ .
Don’t take any shit. Glad you’re here on FR.
Actually they did apologize. Multiple times. But the war ended over 70 years ago! Japan and the U.S. are today close allies. Nobody in Japan today has anything to apologize for, just like you and I don't need to apologize for slavery prior to the Civil War.
However, since I was growing up during the 1970s, I guess I do owe the world an apology for disco and bell-bottom pants.
Makes sense.
I know that there isn't a genetic reason (we are all cousins through Adam and Noah, after all), but there seem to be a lot people afflicted with the 'driving while Asian' ailment in the Bay Area.
When traveling I found the drivers in Japan (at least the Tokyo area) to be pretty good. Taiwan and Seoul scared me (as a passenger).
I remember Speed Racer. IIRC, there was one, and only one, episode where he didn’t win a race. And the only reason he didn’t win was because he threw the race to someone who he felt needed to win more.
The sports writer is right to be uncomfortable. After all, the Japanese had worked out a code back in 1941 that if their man won the Indy 500 that year, this meant that they were to bomb Pearl Harbor.
My friend Yi is a kind of nervous driver. Reverse is definitely not her forte’.
I taught her daughter to drive, and she’s fine. But she was born here. When Yi’s parents came to visit, they always wanted me to drive everywhere!
This is a common mistake of the casual observer.
What you’re talking about is Powersliding. Drift has nothing to do with performance and times around a track. It’s about car control, balance and communication (When twinning).
Autocross and Ghymkhana are the same.
Drift has a different points system that creates the whole event. It’s not just taking a corner at the limits of control.
