Alaska's Bogoslof Volcano erupted Sunday, sending a plume of ash at least 35,000 feet into the air and temporarily triggering the highest aviation alert, scientists say.

The Bogoslof Volcano in the Aleutian Islands erupted at 2:16 p.m. Sunday, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory. The eruption lasted 55 minutes.

No further ash emissions have occurred at Bogoslof Volcano since the explosion, and seismic activity remains low, according to the observatory.

British Airways Flight 9 in 1982 lost all engines due to ash from Jakarta volcano. They eventually recovered. There's an excellent Air Crash Investigations episode about it.

The pilots were amazing - a great example of the British "stiff upper lip" mentality.

“GLOBAL WARMING!!! Trump hates the atmosphere. Women and minorities hardest hit. RUN FOR THE HILLS!!!”

Remember?

Russia used to be attached to Alaska via a land bridge. So we can’t completely rule Russia out.

Expect monster salmon runs in a couple of years. The ash fertilizes things that get eaten by things that salmon eat.

Oh, and btw, a large enough volcanic eruption can cool the globe for at least a couple of years.

And it didn't even make the Drudge page!

Even today, the Aleutian Islands volcanoes are so remote that sometimes it takes days to weeks for anyone to notice one of the volcanoes has erupted.

Because of volcano eruptions, some areas in Alaska has as much as 100 feet of good rich top soil, and their vegetables are so good, (with the exception of potatoes), their berries and flowers are larger and sweeter.

Agree. God is in charge of the ‘recycling’ listed in my post #14. In His hands, every atom is consumed and re-emerges in another form - round and round we go.

May God continue to bless us - even though we don’t always earn or appreciate His love.

The eruption of Mt. Tambora in the East Indies in 1815 (the greatest volcanic eruption in the last 2000 years) put so much ash in the atmosphere that temperatures were abnormally cold in 1816 and 1817, causing widespread starvation in many places because the crops failed to ripen. There were upwards of 100,000 deaths in Ireland alone from famine and disease. The story is well told by Gillen Wood, Tambora (2014), except that he keeps interjecting editorials about climate change into the narrative.

The only possible effect here in Anchorage are incoming and outgoing airplanes. Depending on where the winds take the plumes of ash, planes have to reroute to stay out of it. Haven’t heard anything.
