OpEd: The Punishment of Deanna and Mya Cook is Much Bigger Than Braids
NBC news ^ | May 22 2017 | Rep Bonnie Watson Coleman

Sadly, this type of disciplinary action is just as common as it is outrageous, as girls of color face many overlapping barriers to succeed in school, the workplace and even in society.

National data shows that Black girls are 5.5 times more likely to be suspended from school than white girls, and that rate balloons to 8.5 times in my own state of New Jersey.

The dress code ban on hair extensions seems clear and easily understood.

Maybe they should learn to conduct themselves properly within a civilized society then.

A policy against braids?!? In a world of full of stupid things happening with & in schools, this may be the dumbest.

A statistic that doesn't mean what they want people to think it does.

Leftists are always ready to seize on ANY “outlier” incident like this one to merge it into general statistics and claim massive “bias.” Meanwhile everyone knows Black girls and boys are suspended at higher rates because of behavior and violence issues.

Well, Bonnie, a critically thinking Black girl would conclude that it pays to "act White", was that hard?

I agree. It seems the reason behind the policy has nothing to do with safety or hygiene and everything to do with not wanting students to look more wealthy than other students. As long as students are modest and not distracting others, the school administrators should mind their own business. I hate the way socialism has entrenched itself in education.

REP. BONNIE WATSON COLEMAN via NBC [Nothing But Crap] News: "National data shows that Black girls are 5.5 times more likely to be suspended from school than white girls"

Wait! What?!?

"Black" is capitalized, but "white" is not?!?

Demonicrat Bonnie Watson Coleman and NBCNews need to apologize for spewing such racist hatred and denigration.

Do you not realize the school 100% acknowledges the discipline is for the wearing of braids? What "other half of the story" is there?

School uniforms solve these problems.

Dress codes used to provide this function until the Grievance Industry and the ‘Full Employment for Tort Lawyers’ Industry got rolling.

They knew the rules. They chose to break them. Hence, they chose to endure the consequences of breaking those rules.

It's not about skin color, it's about breaking rules.
