I'm a professor who often posts here and on FB. Two university officials are coming to my office today to speak with me about my posts. I told them this is a free speech issue. Feeling like I need legal advice. This is a public university.
Advice? Moral support?

FWIW, I am not in HR, and I may be way off here but watch out for the "employee improvement" plan set up, i.e. meet these 3 benchmarks or we terminate you. Tangent to that if they get nasty and make the workplace unbearable, that possibly is hostile work environment territory. They don't want to do that to you that is a big no no in terms of HR....
Remember HR depts hate this stuff, lawyers, and the potentiality of things getting icky, and perhaps those pressuring you are potentially putting them is a corner and potentially you might have the stronger hand with a couple of aces. Having a protectiveness for the sake of your own careers stand, with those than can guide and give you protective advice is worth way more that what I posted, Go find those professionals.
it would be such a coincidence if a local conservative news crew happened to be in your office at the scheduled time....
Lol! RSBN with Jacob Steale's rocking geetar playing the background, talk about getting them off their game....
Keeps records on who said what and when to you. Best if you can get it on tape just in case even if it appears to be minor issues. I am not sure what the privacy laws are, but might they be overstepping them?
Reading some of this posters “in forum” comments, I have cause to doubt any of this is true. No ‘good’ college professor would use the kind of language that is used on multiple occasions. No professional pride, in my opinion.
A step in the right direction.
THREAD WINNER!!
Ask them if they have talked to any lib professors about their posts, show them some examples. I’m sure you can find some.
Call Liberty Law they are conservative lawyers who fight against Liberals.
Never use work email for FB or FR for postings.
Pull the old “For Your Protection” routine and use either your cellphone in video mode or a camera to record the “interview”. Half the time, when these worthies see there will be a record made of their “visit”, they fold like a card table.
You are incorrect.
This is not a "free speech" issue as regards your free speech rights protected by the first amendment.
Did you use a university supplied computer?university supplied internet?and post on university time? If u did any of those 3 things you are dead in my opinion.
Yes I’m tenured. Just had the meeting. I actually went on offense and explained my rights and my rationale. I actually think they agreed with my rights.
It turned into a friendly conversation. Yes, I know I should beware, but one of the people here was a colleague who I believe “gets it.”
Regarding DU. Yep, that’s me. Apparently they contacted the president of the university and the local police. I explained the context of both my remarks (one from the Late Show on CBS, the other from Barry Goldwater). My colleague joked that it would be a shame if we all had to start footnoting our posts.
Anyhow, I’ll keep everyone updated.
Thanks for your support.
I hadn’t seen the second set of rules - interesting.
As to the OP... Others have covered the main points. Otherwwise, I’d say add another vote to be very careful what you do and say on the net, especially if you’re on company time or hardware. People are watching and that stuff doesn’t go away.
bkmk
I’m no lawyer but, I say tape the conversation.
Don’t tell them, It may come in handy some day.
Based on what I Post on Fakebook, I will never be offered a position at a University, even as a Janitor.
Call a Lawyer. Heck, contact the ACLU and get one of their Lawyers. They are big on Free Speech, or so we are told.
I’m so sorry you have been harassed like this. Disgusting people.
Thanks.
