Chasing Cats in Alabama (vanity)
me | 5/13/17 | eastforker

Catching catfish when living in Texas was always a passion of mine as you can see from my profile page. We retired in Alabama 2 years ago but last year I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and I never got to fish during recovery. Cancer is all in the past so this year we are back chasing cats. Brought this 40 pounder in this morning but still looking for old grandad, he's out there somewhere.

I retired in what I thought was good health, 62 and figured I was good till 65 when medicare kicked in. Then the Big C showed up, had to wait 6 months to qualify for VA bennefits, then they took care of everything, thank goodness or I probably would not be here now.

...still looking for old grandad, he's out there somewhere.

When I was a teenager the lake we used to fish for catfish at dried up. My brother and I walked out to the middle of the muddy bottom and found "old grandad" still flopping around in the last puddle!

I also have two cats. One of them badly in need of herding. The damn thing will jump up on the dresser while I am asleep on my back. Will then launch herself and unceremoniously land on my crotch. My wife thinks it is hilarious, but I don’t. I swear that damned critter has shaved an octave off of my speaking voice.

I had one that liked to sleep on my head. Mostly on the pillow but also on my head. Cute. Then one morning while in a sound sleep this cats develops an itch. So the starts scratching. Violently. I felt as if someone had grabbed my head and was shaking it. I closed the room off to cats after that.

Go up to Nickajack Lake near South Pittsburg, TN. Always heard the biggest cats are found there.

Yup, heard and read stories about that, but not as much fun as running the channel feeding into the river.

As a teen, my buddy and I took snappers out of the canal and river. We’d get past date meat from the butcher, put a big hook in it an toss it on the garage roof foof for a couple days, then hook a big hook onto it, and toss it into the canal, hooked to a four foot stake. Biggest snapper we ever caught was 62 pounds. I won’t speak about the butchering as it was very brutal. Good bucks from the delis though!

I used fermented shad sides for channels. I had to use rubber gloves and tied it to treble hooks with thread.

Old grandad, eh?

Don’t take Bill Cosby fishing with you.
He likes his catfish like he likes his women ..
Young, female & easy to catch...

My absolute all-time favorite ad, followed closely by the Carling Black label 617 Squadron ‘Dambusters’ ad and the John West Salmon ad.

Yep, NE Alabama. Little River Canyon. High School kids from West Rome High School Ga. Would go to Little River Canyon to swim in the river and party on the shore. Eventually, the entire senior class played hooky from school and the assistant principal was already there at Little River Canyon waiting for them.
