The world's oceans close to being starved of oxygen - and even that could lead to mass sea life extinction which could last a million years. University of Exeter scientists fear the modern ocean is 'on the edge of anoxia' - when the oceans are depleted of oxygen. [snip]
Lead researcher PhD student Sarah Baker said it was now 'critical' for modern humans to limit carbon emissions to prevent this.

These people are idiots. They will probably say space aliens may come kill us all to stop us from destroying life on earth.

“Scientists say...” means the article is likely propaganda. Honest journalism would qualify which scientists and if others said something different...instead it seems the intent is for the reader to non critically infer that science itself has spoken.

.but NOT independent of convection, right? And temperature differences would promote convection, right?
temperature difference triggers convection only if high temperature is at the bottom. In oceans, high temperature is at the top because the heat source (sun) is at the top, so there is no convection in oceans. It's like trying to boil a pot of water from the top, there will be no convection cell. There is though localized mixing from wind, conveyor belts currents...

I have no clue if its a molecule or what, I just meant that water is H2O. So water has to have a certain amount of oxygen, yet the article is supposedly about the ocean running out of oxygen. Hence my question - is water no longer made up of H2O?

They are talking of disolved O2 molecules in the water and not the oxygen atoms in the H2O itself.

My wife's nagging me while I drive a car will not influence my blood alcohol level - they are two independent factors. There may be a causational factor involved, if your wife's nagging drove you to drink, your blood alcohol would certainly go up, and thus affect your driving.

Two oxygen atoms make up an oxygen molecule. Monoatomic oxygen is very reactive and very corrosive.
Oh, by the way, I majored in chemistry in college.

It's like trying to boil a pot of water from the top, there will be no convection cell. There is though localized mixing from wind, conveyor belts currents... I knew someone was gonna come with that sort of argument - that's why I explicitly pointed out that water reaches its max. density at +4.5 °C.
Thus, under certain circumstances, insolation (incident solar radiation) would result in massive convection.
E.g.: A body of saltwater (3.5% salt concentration - like the ocean) with a more-or-less uniform temperature of, say, +1 °C (maybe +3 °C at the bottom, maybe -0.5 °C at the top)... Sun comes out from behind the clouds and heats the surface. Surface temperature rises to +4.5 °C. Surface water is now denser than the rest of the body of water. Surface water therefore sinks. Voilà: Convection!

Hence my question - is water no longer made up of H2O?The article is talking about oxygen available to living organisms. The oxygen "locked" into H2O is not accessible (for "breathing" purposes) to fish, dolphins, or humans. Normally, water contains a certain quantity of dissolved oxygen (like saltwater contains dissolved salt).
Pure H2O, containing no dissolved oxygen, is called anoxic. The bottom of, e.g., the Black Sea is an anoxic zone - meaning that only primitive organisms like anaerobic bacteria can thrive there.

No oxygen, in a giant worldwide sea of .... H2O. (emphasis on the o)See above postings, catchword: Dissolved oxygen (i.e., the only kind that fish can breathe).

How the Fluck does water which is HYDROGEN AND OXYGEN, lose its oxygen? Tell me. Please. That’s not possible. It would cease being water.
