The pay TV business used to deny that cord-cutting was a thing. It doesn’t make that argument any more.

That estimate comes from MoffettNathanson analyst Craig Moffett, one of those people who used to be skeptical about cord-cutting but became a believer a few years ago. He says the industry just had its worst Q1 ever.

I am thinking of buying an indoor digital antenna for a friend. In doing my research on digital antennas, I’m learning that with a digital antenna, she would be getting only a tiny handful of the most boring channels (abc, cbs, pbs, nbc, etc). It seems to me that she would be better off getting more channels, and entertaining ones, with basic cable.
Four years now for me and I can watch anything online for free.

My father is 90 years old and cannot watch 99+% of movies made today.
I’ve browsed over 5000 movie offerings on primewire and was able to find maybe 20 or so that were decent enough for him to watch.
Youtube has been great. Lately we’ve been watching the old Daniel Boone TV series. With 165 episodes it’ll be several months before I have to look for something else.
The digital antenna gives me about 40 stations but it’s really only to get the local ones - CBS, NBC, ABC, PBS, Fox, The CW, and a couple of others. The rest are largely crap like home shopping network. The main ones are 720p or 1080p.
It’s the Android TV box or Firestick that lets you stream just about everything else from the internet, anywhere from 1 hr to 24 hrs after it airs. It actually also has some live feeds.
So you can watch current stuff as well as binge-watch older stuff, like, say all seasons of House for example.
Another option is to get something like Sling TV, which is what my sister does and which has a monthly fee but is much cheaper than cable options. You don’t end up paying for 80 channels you will never watch.
I long for Internet TV that is totally on demand including what the wife wants to watch. This includes live news I can trust; not fake news.

The only thing I watch is DVD’s I already own or random things on youtube. Recently I watched the development of the B36 bomber and the bombing war over Europe in WWII on youtube. Good shows!
I cut the cable February 2013.
Have not only not missed it, but have given it nary a thought since. I have saved $100 a month plus countless hours of time I would have spent jelling in front of the idiot box.
I highly recommend it.

I have my Comcast.net email and have never had their cable TV service, just the internet.
Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu are good streaming services. Hulu carries NBC, ABC, and Fox original programming one day later. There’s also CBS All Access to get CBS shows. All together, those streaming services cost a lot less per month than cable.
To watch those streaming services on your TV, you can get a Roku, or Apple TV. I’ve been using a Blu-ray player that comes with streaming capabilities.
Agreed. A lot of people would keep their cable if they had the option of choosing their stations.

The woman i am considering buying the indoor digital antenna for, is moving into a new apartment and she doesnt want to get internet which is needed for the android tv box, firestick, or sling tv, etc. Digital antenna is the only way to go for her because she doesnt want internet, much less cable tv. I wish one could get channels that air classic movies (such as TCM or “Movies!”) and classic tv shows (such as METV or Antenna tv) via a digital antenna.
