The Breakthrough Listen project is managed by a team at the University of California, Berkeley, SETI Research Center and uses the Parkes Telescope in Australia, the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia and the Automated Planet Finder optical telescope at Lick Observatory in California to collect radio signal data a LOT of radio signal data. In just two years, the project has accumulated eight petabytes (8 million gigabytes) of data from observations of just 692 stars that have been designated as possible candidates for alien life a total of 1709 stars have been selected for the project. Each is observed for three five-minute periods and the stars fall into one of two categories: a) within 16 light years from our Sun or b) up to 163 light years away.
If the Breakthrough Listen project sounds familiar, its the group that spotted the irregular dimming of Tabbys Star. It has since been determined that the dimming is not due to a Dyson sphere or other alien activity but is caused by comet fragments interfering with signals.
What about the 11 other signals that didnt fit the usual pattern? The Green Bank Telescope looks for signals in frequencies ranging from 1.1 to 1.9 GHz where artificial ones can be distinguished from natural sources like pulsars, quasars, radio galaxies and Cosmic Microwave Background the electromagnetic radiation left over from the time of recombination in Big Bang cosmology (and a great name for a band). The eleven events rose above the threshold for significance and ranged from to 25.4 to 3376.9 SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio).

Um, hate to disagree with the article, but NO, Tabby’s star has not been ruled out as possible alien mega-structure.
But that is 1950's pricing. I can get you one for $99.99, and if you call within the next 10 minutes, I'll toss in a second one for free! Just pay for separate postage and handling.
16 light years = ~96 trillion miles. This would require a transmit level 12,000 x 12,000 x 8 watts from the same antenna to be barely detectable. That's approximately 1,152,000,000 watts. Sure if they use a 90 foot dish they only need 11,200,000 watts but if they have that much power to waste, why do they need to come here and steal our oceans and use our people for food?
One alien whispering to another: “They spend all their time and energy killing each other in various ways for so many different reasons. We will never have to invade, they will wipe themselves out and leave us their planet!”
I was there for the day it was turned on. Right before the ceremony (had to listen to Byrd tell us how wonderful he was for over an hour) Well anyway they had found a quasar and played the sound through the PA system. It sounded just like a heartbeat. Not a little but exactly like one. We have a lot to learn.
Fascinating story. Thanks for sharing.
lol.
I’ve never understood “dog bites man”. Though i’ve read/heard it a thousand times :)
10 of them say: Don’t send us those transgender things!
The 11th was too garbled to interpret...
Lock & Load! ...
Scientists couldn’t quite make out the sounds, but it sounded like “We’re coming” and “Die Humans!”
Forget the comment - love the tagline!
So, an alien detection project run by Berkeley. I would think they could save a ton of money and dramatically increase their odds of success by trading their telescope for a mirror.
Idiots. Advanced civilizations don’t use fm radio or satellite tv. They use cable internet. Sheesh. There’s nothing to hear.
Actually Greg Bear’s “Forge of God” explains why.
Using a lack of detectable artificial radio signals as a criteria for saying we’re alone in the galaxy is as ridiculous as wandering through the urban skyscraper canyons of NYC and declaring there must no civilization there because you don’t see any traditional native american smoke signals. Never mind that we live in an artificially-constructed planetary environment and carry clear evidence of genetic tampering in our bodies. We don’t hear RADIO signals we can understand so that’s the end of the discussion. Right.
The smug prick’s claim in the article that comets explain Tabby’s Star is yet another insult to intelligence. That theory was discredited some time ago.
Shortly after the Breakthrough Listen Project released its findings, Hillary Clinton blamed extraterrestrials for her loss to Donald Trump.
Thanks, I had to change it a long time ago, people who didn’t like what I posted said I was threatening them.
