Tua Tagovailoa
It seems silly to have to write this: Jalen Hurts is Alabamas starting quarterback.
Hurts was both the SECs freshman and offensive player of the year in 2016 as he led the Crimson Tide to a national runner-up finish. He threw for 2,780 yards and 23 touchdowns while also gaining 954 yards and scoring 13 times on the ground. This was all as a true freshman.
Sure, he struggled in the College Football Playoff against top-notch defenses as a passer. Again, he was a true freshman. He had a fantastic season, but now the Tide, like always, brought in another highly-rated recruit at the position. His name is Tua Tagovailoa, and he performed quite well during Saturdays spring game at Bryant Denny Stadium.
Tagovailoa, a lefty from Hawaii, enrolled early and has impressed throughout spring ball. That carried over to A-Day as he led touchdown drives on his first two series and finished the day with 313 yards, three touchdowns (one on a wacky deflection) and an interception (which was returned for a touchdown on an awesome play by Terrell Hall) while working with both the first and second-team offenses.

Tua looked sharp and Jalen looked much improved also as passers.
Tua does everything right-handed but play football...he plays football left-handed because his dad made him play as a lefty from his early childhood.
The A-Day game was a passing explosion with each QB passing for over 300 yards.
- Roll Tide -
Roll Tua Roll!
Good situation for Alabama to be in. We went into last season not knowing who our QB would be.
Jalen Hurts looked much improved and Tua looked very good as well.
To most football fans, the best QB on any team is the one sitting on the bench.
“To most football fans, the best QB on any team is the one sitting on the bench.”
So true.
Everywhere but Foxboro and Green Bay.
I agree. Jalen will be the starter but Saban said that Tua had been performing well throughout spring practice. That’s pretty impressive for a guy that should be in his second semester of his senior year in high school.
It’s good for Alabama to be in this situation.
I am also glad that I can finally pronounce his last name - Tonga-vi-ola. :)
Jalen was awful the second half of the year. By the championship game, the offense was one dimensional. But people kept saying “He’s just a freshman.” So if he continues the downward spiral, will the remark be “He’s just a sophomore?”
In the first part of the year the defense was scoring about half as much as the offense.
I have friends who say that Jalen had the team in the lead in the last two minutes of the championship game and that the defense let us down.
IMO....we should have been much further ahead so that we didn't have a squeeker of a game in the last second....same with that game where Auburn beat us in the last second of the game.
Put the damn points on the board and quit lollygagging around!!
That was the best A-Day game I’ve seen in years.
It wasn’t just Jalen’s improvement or Tua’s impressive performance.
Jerry Jeudy looked like a potential superstar & Najee Harris lived up to his reputation.
I know it was only a spring game but our offense has the potential to be downright “sick”. Incredible amount of weapons.
It also helps that the Lane Kiffin drama is gone which, in my opinion, hurt us greatly in the playoffs.
I agree.
I'm looking forward to seeing Jeudy perform.
I feel a lot more confident about the passing game now.
Looks like some sort of critter is trying to burro into Tua’s head.
