The grim realities of the Second World War were brought to life outside Moscow yesterday, as the final battle in the European conflict was re-enacted. Human fireballs and tanks descending on the German capital were among the spectacles as the race to Berlin was replicated. The huge operation was carried out in Kubinka, outside Moscow, when members of historical groups donned Nazi uniforms to replicate the battle for Berlin.

That was the rear-echelon troops, who moved in after the battle was over. The front-line combat soldiers were pretty well-behaved, for Russians.
How fun! We should do that here! No need to snark at them, they didn’t do it.
I’ve always kind of wondered how front line troops found the time to think of rape whilst the bullets were still flying and the buildings blowing up.
At least the Soviet re-enactors equipment was more authentic looking. One photo shows an IS-2, T-34-85, Zis-S-53, and a Katyusha rocket launcher. Though most of the Soviet infantry seems to be armed with Mosin Nagant rifles instead of PPSH automatic weapons.
The fact the Russian government is pushing this sort of thing indicates they are trying to either retain their cultural memory of the “Great Patriotic War” or prepare their population for the next war.
It is kind of odd, but in the 1970s the Soviets created a lot of WWII movies that made even the western blockbuster of the era “ A Bridge Too Far” seem rather small scale. The equipment in those films and the attempt to make the german stuff seem correct, instead of slapping a german cross on any old vehicles makes those movies worth watching.
Now with our current leftist types I think they would prefer to bury any mention of WWII, as it featured white males fighting evil, and well we cannot point out that Western culture has any redeeming values, after all it is racist, homophobic, sexist, etc.
I watched the Soviet production of “War & Peace” in the 1970s, on ABC iirc, and was amazed at the size of the recreation of a Napoleonic era battle.
That was quite amazing. A very well made movie.
Oh, they are. Just by a more...recent...set of visitors than the Russians.
