ts hard to find examples of worse decision-making and customer treatment than United Airlines having a passenger dragged from an overbooked plane. But Uniteds shabby treatment of Geoff Fearns, including a threat to place him in handcuffs, comes close.
Fearns, 59, is president of TriPacific Capital Advisors, an Irvine investment firm that handles more than half a billion dollars in real estate holdings on behalf of public pension funds. He had to fly to Hawaii last week for a business conference.
Fearns needed to return early so he paid about $1,000 for a full-fare, first-class ticket to Los Angeles. He boarded the aircraft at Lihue Airport on the island of Kauai, took his seat and enjoyed a complimentary glass of orange juice while awaiting takeoff.

This man's name is Geoff Fearns. Yes I guess this is United Airlines goes to hell week.
I am surprised the United CEO hasn’t resigned yet. Look for many United stories now. Media has a target.
If full-fare, 1rst Class passengrrs can be bumped, WTH is the point of 1rst Class?!
United has gone into the crapper. I used to be Global Services when I was consulting. Spent about $60k a year just with United on flights, so yeah there are perks; but never saw this type of behavior.
United’s stocks had more turbulence today. How low and now long will it have to fall before they get rid of the guy? Or will they be like Target and just keep him on as the ship errr as plane takes a nosedive?
This is normal.
I have seen it twice on AA.
There are levels of status and the highest one is when you prepay for 1st for the year. It GUARANTEES 1st class every time.
That means someone a little lower, especially if they were upgraded, get bumped, even if they are seated.
Just like the doctor this is part of your agreement when you fly with the airline.
I wish people who have no idea what they are talking about would quit opining on air travel.
I saw that last night. Hilarious!
Was listening to Gov. Christie talk.
No that Doctor was bumped to make room for staff. I agree with Christie let the paying customers ride not staff. The staff can sit on the floor or sit on the can for all I care. Paying customers should have their seat. Staff can take the next fight out.
No he did not mean staff working that fight either, staff going home.
I was on an airline once which was overbooked.
They asked for volunteers who would get some reward. A whole bunch immediately raised their hands. I noticed every one was a young man.

I was talking about this case where someone who was in 1st was bumped. It is extremely unusual for a full-fare 1st to be bumped but it is allowed.
As for the doctor case, I give up explaining the law and the rules and the practice to people.
The blood-lust is on red-alert level.
You were actually talking about both, I just addressed the one.
As for the dude in first class in this story. Why can’t they tell him before he gets on the plane and checks in his luggage? Why do they wait for people to check in and sit down then tell them?
Let’s publicize the name of this, “higher priority passenger”. It would be fun to out someone who’ thinks their s**t doesn’t stink.

Because they want his Money. Then Screw him!

No, I was only speaking of this one case. I said specifically 1st can be bumped by higher priority and I had seen it.

The article (which you posted BTW) said they had to change equipment. When this happens, the computer reassigns seats based on an algorithm no one will admit to. So they don’t know until the seats are both assigned AND FILLED since here are still no-shows up to the moment of boarding.
Thus, the request after seating.
I have nearly 3 million real miles BTW. All North America. That is a LOT of flights. I have seen it all.
