Electric vehicle fee proposed for Minnesota

Electric vehicle owners in Minnesota would have to pay a $75 to $85 annual "surcharge" under proposed legislation since they do not pay the state's gasoline tax.

State governments across the country are increasingly seeking to slap such fees on electric vehicles, some exceeding $150 per year.

The Minnesota fee would cover vehicles that are all-electric and plug-in hybrids based on electric motors, but exclude gasoline-electric hybrids.

The fee is aimed at making electric vehicle drivers pay their fair share of road maintenance costs, which are partly funded by gasoline taxes, said Rep. Pat Garofalo, R-Farmington, the author of the House measure that would set a fee of $85 a year. A Senate bill proposes the same.

The money will probably be used to subsidize more Somali Muslims.

Buy cars that get great gas mileage. Gasoline usage decreases, revenue from the gas tax decreases. Solution:
tax miles driven! Makes perfect sense to me /s

I’m tellin’ ya...

They have been actually trying to justify increasing bus and light rail fares for habitual users because they don’t drive cars and therefore don’t pay any gas taxes.

I s@#t you not.

Sometimes the gooberment can't decide whether to tax or subsidize an activity. So they just do both.

It’s so bizarre ans surreal that I should be crying.

But I think it’s hysterical how they try to get EVERY LIVING CENT out of us.

And half the country loves that.

Jerks.

I’m still wanting them to wheel-tax bicycles along with the coal burners.

We use road money to build bike trails, paths and lanes, and they STILL feel a need for a dozen of them to ride 2 abreast on the county roads and ignore all traffic signs.

There are bike trails and hiking paths in MN that require one to purchase a use permit.

If it moves, tax it...if it doesn’t move subsidize it. Shit, his is just taxpayer money, so charge more fees so you can be able to pave more roads. Taxes are so good and good for you.

If it is “just” to tax gasoline, as part of paying for roads, then there is nothing wrong with expecting electric car owners to pay some sort of fee that makes an average comparable payment to helping fund the roads that electric cars need as well.

While it might be Libertarian pure to complain about charging to fee to electric car owners, there is nothing honest about doing so. The “users pay” concept of most of the funding for roads should NOT exempt electric car owners.

Either get rid of the fuel taxes and fund roads some other way entirely, or be honest and admit electric car owners should not be “exempt”. The former is not practical so the latter ought to be admitted.

Everyone who uses the highways need to pay something for there upkeep, including electric vehicles. In the NL in addition to gas taxes, an annual fee is charged based on on the weight of the car. Older cars (25 years and up are exempt)

Please $85 fair share? In PA the gas tax is .58 per gallon. Assuming even 40 mpg if you drive over 6500 miles per year you aren’t even close to fair share.

Exactly! Did the electric car owners that got their purchase subsidized by the rest of us bitch about that? They are driving on the roads, contributing to the wear and tear of the roads and should pay a fair share towards the maintenance of the roads, just like everyone else. Why should feel good environmentalists keep getting subsidized by the rest of us, how many places do you see free charging stations for electric cars? Who driving a gas powered car is ever given free gas?

I read the comments at the site and most of them WANT higher taxes. It is only fair.... I bet there are no potholes on Minnesota roads as the tax collected allow the roads to be paved in gold.
