Have you upgraded to Intels Kaby Lake or AMDs Ryzen, but still refuse to give up on Windows 7? Going forward, thats going to become a bit of a problem, as Microsoft has said that its cutting off Windows Update support for such a configuration one that also includes Windows 8.1.
In effect, this means that if you are running one of the newest CPUs and either Windows 7 or 8.1, Windows Update will refuse to update. You should still be able to upgrade straight to Windows 10, but as for those minor updates that get pushed through on regular occasion those are a no-go.

Basically, Microsoft is saying:
"Say, nice little computer ya got there... be a shame if anything happened to it... how about you upgrade to Windows 10 now?"So now THIS MEANS NOTHING if you were so careless as to purchase a computer with a modern CPU.
Hopefully someone will work out a way to get the updates, without having to play too many stupid games or latch onto somebody's WSUS.
So Microsoft will quit pushing its spyware if I upgrade to the latest Intel chip? Sounds like I need to consider doing that.
LOL I like how you think!

Ha. I’ll buy a RedHat copy of Linux long before I steal another copy of WinBlows.
all my love and affection for Billy Gates....NOT
OK, what date of Mfg. is considered a “modern” CPU?
NONE of computers and their parts are made in USA. Sorry, but you are CONTRIBUTING to the trade deficit if you buy laptops, computers, processors, heat sinks etc.
Geesh; you’d think the CIA is paying Microsoft for every PC on Windows 10.
Er,.... wait...
New Architecture/BIOS chips. They never said that it would work on ALL future intel platforms. Not saying it’s a good move, but just saying they still support Win7 on all systems that were out when it was mainstream.
That was my immediate thought on reading this: sounds more like a solution than a problem.
I do too.

And people wonder why I advocate for Linux...
Linux won’t care.
And the alternative is......?
You're factually correct, but missing the point.
Microsoft said they'd provide security updates for Win7 until 2020. Period. There were no caveats like, "Except if you upgrade your hardware".
Consider this. Apple is a hardware company. They tell you up-front-and center, "Your hardware will stop being supported by our latest and greatest OS releases after some number of years." This is because they want you to buy new hardware after a while.
By contrast, Microsoft is a software company. They could tell you, "Your software will stop being supported after some numbers of years if you get the latest and greatest hardware." That would be okay to do if they let you know up-front.
But no, they pulled it out of their hat AFTER 7+ years. My personal belief is that they are so freaked out by the slower-than-expected uptake of Windows 10 that they are willing to piss off a lot of their base to try to force people to adopt Win10.
This is not policy or strategy. This is strong-arm tactics.
Dual-botting Linux Mint 18.1.
It’s excellent for many things.
