Microsoft unveils new ARM server designs, threatening Intel’s dominance

****************************************************************************

Intel has a near-monopoly in the server industry, with its own ads proclaiming that “98 percent of the cloud runs on Intel.” That’s why Microsoft’s pledge to use ARM chips in its severs — hinted at for a while and outlined more fully at the Open Compute Summit this week — is such a big deal. Microsoft is the second biggest cloud company in the US after Amazon, and if it moves even a small bit of its business away from Intel’s products, it threatens the veteran chipmaker’s most lucrative revenue stream, responsible for $7.5 billion in operating profit last year.

From the above linked article:

A new collaboration between Microsoft and Qualcomm will bring ARM processors to data center servers running the Windows operating system.

Qualcomm is a viable competitor only in the low end.

Intel is STILL the master of the data center and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

...and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

The problem with technology is that the "foreseeable future" is typically 24 months these days.

Every home of Freepers needs their own Home NAS *Network attached server.

QNQP seems to have a good one with its own x386 OS.

But costs above $500 so every one has ad hoc ways for backup and long time storage...

Easy to do when server functionality is much more limited than general desktop functionality. But if you’re talking general computing, a real x86-64 instruction CPU is way better. That’s why while Apple has dabbled with ARM architecture CPU’s for the Mac models, they’re still staying with Intel because Intel CPU’s do way more in terms of complex processing tasks like multimedia processing.

Maybe. But I think the RISC instruction set of the ARM CPU is way better for servers, since servers aren’t asked to process the complex multimedia files you need with a regular desktop computer. Note that Android phones require multiple core CPU’s to do multimedia processing, and Apple optimizes its software for its A-series CPU/GPU, backed up by a lot of cache memory for each of its two cores.
