26 U.S. Code § 7213 - Unauthorized disclosure of information
(a) Returns and return information
(3) Other persons
It shall be unlawful for any person to whom any return or return information (as defined in section 6103(b)) is disclosed in a manner unauthorized by this title thereafter willfully to print or publish in any manner not provided by law any such return or return information. Any violation of this paragraph shall be a felony punishable by a fine in any amount not exceeding $5,000, or imprisonment of not more than 5 years, or both, together with the costs of prosecution.
EDIT.
And just to be clear, it's irrelevant that she's media. The NYT refrained from publishing Trump's tax return in October last year because it would be a felony.
EDIT 2.
The White House warned Maddow not to release the documents, as doing so is illegal!
EDIT 3. This AC challenges the claim that this was a felony. Let's be clear - Maddow committed a felony by releasing the tax return.

Great leverage to negotiate with MSNBC. Fire her or else.

Ex wives have this info in divorce files. Marla Maples and Trump divorced in 2005 I believe.

Marla Maples and DJT divorced in 1999. DJT married Melania in 2005.

please explain how obtaining personal, legally protected information about someone and publishing it is a “free speech” issue.
The protections on the tax returns are pursuant to a sliver of the 4th amendment. Because government compels disclosure, the information is protected to ensure privacy.
If this is a “free speech” issue, then the 1st amendment must allow for abrogation of the 4th.

It might have been her incentive.

She sure did, beyond a shadow of a doubt. Specifically illegal. If the government doesn’t go after her, then there is no rule of law.

I hope they just fine her. I do not want to endure the debates over the unanswerable question: whether Maddow belongs in a men’s or women’s prison.

My son just moved to a new location, still within SF. His new home has 1400 sq ft with very little yard, if any. He pays 3x the amount for his rent that I pay for the mortgage on my 3100 sq ft home on 1-1/2 acres. But hey, he has so many places to shop and eat out where he lives, and there’s a decent transit system when he doesn’t want to drive himself. I don’t have to deal with big city traffic unless I want to (and I usually don’t). To each his own, I guess.

You have to arrest her , the no name who got them in the mail, and the entity that mailed them.I'd have to think the show producer would be complicit too.
