My mother tried everything. Richard Simmons diets, Weight Watchers, Starch Stoppers, you name it. Never lost any weight. She’s over 300 pounds at 5’2” and she’s 89. Dieting would kill her.

Unbelievable

Answer me this:

1. How many adults 60 to 65 years of age do you know who are over 300lbs?
2. How many adults over 70 do you know who are over 250lbs?

3. How many adults over 80 do you know who are over 200 lbs?

4. How many people over the age of 50 who are over 350 lbs do you know?

In short, to say fat people live as long as thin or normal weight people is a lie.

They’re just another victim group now. Victim status is good. “Fat shaming” is bad.

And they’re surprised that dieting and weight loss has fallen out of fashion?

Maybe because more and more research, coupled with the personal experience of everyone who’s ever had a weight problem, is showing that Diets Don’t Work. People get slim, feel good, drop the diet, gain the weight back and then some. I don’t think science has given us any particularly effective methods of controlling weight.

The answer remains less calories and more exercise, but diet plans apparently do not provide an effective means of long term change.

[Another possible cause for the lax perception of body weight is the increased social acceptability. With obesity becoming the norm, many feel less pressure to lose weight, Zhang noted.] Yep. When "fat-shaming" became "politically incorrect", and plus-size models were the new trend, of course women would give up getting in shape. Not to mention, when women post their obesity with pride, other mindless idiots like this whale feel empowered to do the same...

We have this bizarre situation that has never happened before in history where the poorest are the most likely to be obese. Super cheap fattening foods, less physical labor, more non-physical entertainment options, public social assistance all contribute, and now maybe more acceptance of the obese. It’s one of the reasons I doubt that there will ever be any sort of sustained civil unrest in the near future.

Maybe it is because people are sick and tired of the Marie Osmand commercial.

How's this for an out-there hypothesis:

Government paid-for health care and insurance for everything is a factor. It used to that if people got fat, didn't eat nutritionally, took dangerous drugs etc., they knew they were accountable and their bad habits could kill them. Now, there's an over-priced drug for everything. The result is that too many people aren't holding themselves accountable for their health.

It’s not about living longer for me. I went on a diet and lost 55 lbs back in 1998. To get a feel for what that is like, fill a backpack with 55 lbs of stuff, throw it on your back and walk around, climb stairs, etc. Now take it off and see if it feels different.

i.e. loosing that much weight is like going back 20 years.

It’s about enjoying what life you have, not making it longer. And from a Christian perspective - “to live is Christ and to die is gain.”

It’s not death I fear. It’s old age. Death cannot come too quickly.

I compare this life to the womb and after death to the world outside the womb. It is a thing to look forward to. I don’t want to spend any more time in the womb than necessary to reach full development, and then it’s on to the real world!

Obese are at risk for diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, joint pains, cardiovascular issues, and lower metabolism. Of course it depends on what level or degree of obesity, diet and how much activity one partakes in. Some obese people get along just fine. I have hypertension as a normal sized person so carrying extra weight would not be desirable or wanted.

If you take Hispanics and African Americans out of the mix, the Europeans are fatter than the US population. We have bad obesity numbers because of the specific diversity of our population. Their underclass is from Ethiopia and Kenya and countries where they are starving. Ours is from populations of persons who sit around all day drinking red pop and eating corn chips.

Anyone here watch that show “My 600 lb Life”?

I cannot wrap my head around how anyone allows themselves to get that heavy...some of them are in their 20’s.

And it grosses me out to watch them eat...the gross, nasty stuff...chips, soda, ice cream...

And their legs with lymphedema...it’s like watching a train wreck and you can’t look away.

From the article: “There’s increasing evidence that adults with overweight may live as long as and sometimes even longer than normal-weight adults,- - - “

For a few with the right genetics, maybe, for the rest of us, BS!

Imagine tying three 40lb concrete blocks and wearing them day in and day out, which would equate to being obese. That’s a hell of a strain on all body systems.

That’s why these fat slobs use the electric carts at Walmart. Nothing ticks me off more than a fat slob zipping around the store, almost knocking over the little old lady inching along with her walker.

I’m in cardiac rehab, and one of the most important things they are stressing is diet, weight control and exercise.

This article is nothing more than a feel good article so fat slobs can stay fat slobs with no guilt.

The diet industry doesn’t want you to lose weight, just like the medical industry doesn’t want you to be healthy. People are catching on.

Personal tip: I used to be bloated and feel achy, then I stopped eating the big pile of carbohydrates that is on every plate — potatoes, bread, rice, pasta, etc. .... Now my weight ratchets down instead of up. I never tried the Adkins diet, and never will — I am not totally avoiding carbohydrates, I just pass on the big pile of white stuff.

I hate the word diet. It denotes eating different for a certain period of time to lose weight. What the vast majority of these people need is not a diet, but a lifestyle change. They need to eat less portions and healthier foods.

30 years ago as a Marine drill instructor I ran the physical conditioning platoon for a while. It was called various things, the fat platoon, the pork chop platoon. These are the recruits that cannot make it physically and are sent to PCP until they can make it physically or drop out. A large majority of them are usually overweight and many of them do end up dropping out of boot camp. The ones that survive are better for it.

I can tell you from my experiences there, fat shaming (though we didn’t call it that back then, we called it giving the recruits the proper motivation), rigorous exercise and forcing a lifestyle change in eating habits on them works. Everyone of those fat recruits ended up losing weight no matter if they stayed in boot camp or dropped out.

I thought michelle’s lunch program helped a lot of kids lose weight.

Damndest thing. I quit smokin last march and starting losing weight. By August i was @ 180(down from 195) looking to get back down to about 170-175. Playing a lot of golf. I usually can eat most thing and I was able to keep the weight off.

I honestly don’t know what happened, but In August, I started eating everything I saw. Stuff I didn’t like...everything. My weight went the other way. My wife patted my stomach and said “I’ve never seen you with a belly”. I went 30 pounds the other way.
I’ve reduced my intake and reduce the munching between meals. but it’s a struggle.

maybe it’s all the extended time I’ve been on FR lately...yeah that’s the ticket.

“There’s increasing evidence that adults with overweight may” hate the use of euphemisms like “with overweight” instead of “are fat”.
