Why Americans Stopped Dieting: Study Shows Drop In Weight Loss Interest

"There's increasing evidence that adults with overweight may live as long as and sometimes even longer than normal-weight adults, making many question whether you have to take it seriously," Zhang added.

Even in clinical practice, Zhang explained, treatment for overweight is typically considered only if patients exhibit two or more additional risk factors, like hypertension or high cholesterol.

Another possible cause for the lax perception of body weight is the increased social acceptability. With obesity becoming the norm, many feel less pressure to lose weight, Zhang noted.

One theory is that body acceptance trends on social media may have been wrongfully interpreted by a large number of people, who found a sense of comfort in their body image and chose the easy path toward better self-esteem.

While body acceptance advocates do promote body positivity, they do not however promote obesity and an unhealthy lifestyle. In fact, the idea is that embracing who you are should be the cornerstone of a personal improvement plan, by applying a positive attitude toward your body to get better results.

It’s not about living longer for me. I went on a diet and lost 55 lbs back in 1998. To get a feel for what that is like, fill a backpack with 55 lbs of stuff, throw it on your back and walk around, climb stairs, etc. Now take it off and see if it feels different.

i.e. loosing that much weight is like going back 20 years.

It’s about enjoying what life you have, not making it longer. And from a Christian perspective - “to live is Christ and to die is gain.”

It’s not death I fear. It’s old age. Death cannot come too quickly.

I compare this life to the womb and after death to the world outside the womb. It is a thing to look forward to. I don’t want to spend any more time in the womb than necessary to reach full development, and then it’s on to the real world!

Obese are at risk for diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, joint pains, cardiovascular issues, and lower metabolism. Of course it depends on what level or degree of obesity, diet and how much activity one partakes in. Some obese people get along just fine. I have hypertension as a normal sized person so carrying extra weight would not be desirable or wanted.

Before the second half of the 20th century, extra weight was a status symbol. It showed you could afford to eat well.

Fat poor people is a product of the type of food people now eat in developed countries. The fat inducing stuff is the cheap stuff.

Look at old pictures from the great depression. Look for the fat people.

"2. How many adults over 70 do you know who are over 250lbs?"

I'm 73, six feet tall and weigh 237 pounds.

If you take Hispanics and African Americans out of the mix, the Europeans are fatter than the US population. We have bad obesity numbers because of the specific diversity of our population. Their underclass is from Ethiopia and Kenya and countries where they are starving. Ours is from populations of persons who sit around all day drinking red pop and eating corn chips.

They have a different conception of beauty, in the african american commurnity.

It truly is a different culture. I used to laugh at the way they modified their cars. But I eventually realized that their artistic sensibilities are just different than mine. Same with mexicans. None of them are “better”. They’re just different.

You may have hit the nail on the head regarding my wife and me. 63 years old and no health insurance.

That’s why I’m eating hard boiled eggs from our chickens and as Y type this munching on plain almonds and Pecans. I’m going to bite into my apple in a couple of hours.

Actually, it is not a lie. Its completely the truth. But fat or thin, its not about the weight. It is about the genetics and the life style. Fat people in the US are mostly poor. They are poor because they have bad genes. They are stupid, or violent, or addicted or all three as a result of genetics. They live a reckless lifestyle and come from gene pools where life expectancy is low.

There are as many obese people in California as the entire population of Ohio. Why? Mexicans and blacks. Fat and die young. Hence statistics which are claimed (incorrectly) to show people die from being fat. It is a casual relationship. not a causal one.

Supposedly the average woman now weighs 166lbs+, roughly what the average man weighed in 1960.

Of course you’re going after extreme examples that are NOT what the studies are talking about. Most of the studies are in the 20lb “extra” zone, which really means they’re showing the BMI is full of crap.

I don't care what the "studies" show. Look around. I see fat people everywhere. And, I mean FAT. Fifty or more pounds overweight. It's horrendous. A real good portion of Americans are nothing more than animals being fattened to the slaughter.

Anyone here watch that show “My 600 lb Life”?

I cannot wrap my head around how anyone allows themselves to get that heavy...some of them are in their 20’s.

And it grosses me out to watch them eat...the gross, nasty stuff...chips, soda, ice cream...

And their legs with lymphedema...it’s like watching a train wreck and you can’t look away.

I think it’s more eating right for YOUR body. CARBS (bread, oatmeal, etc) make me hungry

And our life expectancy keeps going up. The studies explain that.

From the article: “There’s increasing evidence that adults with overweight may live as long as and sometimes even longer than normal-weight adults,- - - “

For a few with the right genetics, maybe, for the rest of us, BS!

Imagine tying three 40lb concrete blocks and wearing them day in and day out, which would equate to being obese. That’s a hell of a strain on all body systems.

That’s why these fat slobs use the electric carts at Walmart. Nothing ticks me off more than a fat slob zipping around the store, almost knocking over the little old lady inching along with her walker.

I’m in cardiac rehab, and one of the most important things they are stressing is diet, weight control and exercise.

This article is nothing more than a feel good article so fat slobs can stay fat slobs with no guilt.

You had a good point about the rich driving body image. Being tan used to mean you did physical labor outside. Now it is a status symbol, thin and tan.

But some trends do come from the poor, the whole rap/hip hop culture came from poor people and was embraced by fairly well off white kids. I just have a hard time imagining pop stars being generally obese some day though.

Like Rush said, “Feminism was created to give unattractive women easier access to the mainstream of society.”
