An East Georgia town mourns the loss of a local teen over the weekend who was shot after a girl sneaked him into her house and her dad mistook him for an intruder.
A burglary call brought police to a home in the overnight hours Saturday, but before officers arrived, the teen was dead.
It turns out the victim, 17-year-old Jordan Middleton, was a friend of the homeowners daughter.
The homeowner, Derrick Fulton, told police he heard noises downstairs, so he got his handgun from a dresser.
When he got downstairs, the familys dog led him to the guest bedroom. Fulton told deputies he called out that he was armed and the intruder needed to identify themselves. When Middleton didnt say anything, the dog kept barking and acting aggressive toward the bedroom.
Once again, Fulton yelled a warning.
As he entered the bedroom, Middleton ran out of the closet and Fulton shot him in the chest.
Deputies found the young boy lifeless in the foyer.
A 14 year old girl, invites a 17 year old boy into her home past 2:30 in the morning without telling her father. What could possibly go wrong?
“Man....I used to climb into my girlfriends second floor bedroom window at night when I was a teenager. Never got got:) I also knew dad did not have a weapon. Young people do stupid things. Just a fact of life.”
Yeah, I got caught by her kid sister.
That was awkward.
Around ten years later I dated the kid sister.
That was even more awkward.
Disagree...she should have asked her dad if it was ok. It’s not her house and the father is responsible for her well being. How did the father know if she was not being raped and threatened by death by the rapist to shut up? Since no one responded to the fathers commands he had to make a decision...can you imagine what the authorities and his neighbors would have said or accused him of if he didnt do anything and she was raped or killed with him standing there doing nothing?
Stupid young woman and young man. You can blame it on hormones and adrenalin but that doesnt change the equation.
Looking back....some luck is involved getting through those early years. No doubt about it. I feel bad for those involved in this situation.
I’m not saying any of the players were smart, I’m just saying that a resident of a house has the legal right to invite someone into the house.
In the end, I doubt the dad will be convicted but he may be bankrupted.
It is the girls fault. Not the dad and not the boyfriend.
She invited him over knowing her dad was a 2Aer. She is a moron. She should spend till her 21st birthday in juvie. Dad should spend 6 months for manslaughter. So should her mother.
“Looking back....some luck is involved getting through those early years. No doubt about it. I feel bad for those involved in this situation.”
Youth, alcohol and hormones lead to some very dumb actions but none of us would have never been born if not for youth, alcohol and hormones.
Yeah, the daughter threw her boyfriend in front of a bullet and her dad under a bus.
“Yeah, the daughter threw her boyfriend in front of a bullet and her dad under a bus.”
Exactly.
actually, no. Only the person or people with their name on the mortgage or rental lease have the legal right to say who can come in or stay at their house.
If the daughter’s bf was invited over by her and her dad told him to leave and she said “no dad he can stay he’s my guest”, what do you think the cops would do if called? Yea that’s right they’d tell the bf to get the hell out of the house because the owner said so.
The guy was not there under the guise of doing anything criminal, and this is unfortunate, but that’s the risk you take sneaking around someone’s house at night when they don’t know you’re there “visiting” their daughter.
You better read the report.
It was "overnight hours and this was a "guest bedroom" dad went to investigate. The suspect did not respond to warning...And then comes bursting out of a guest closet?
I'd say dad was justified. But certainly no winners here.
In Georgia, unless the girl is under 16, she can consent to sex. If she is 13 or above, it would simply be a misdemeanor for the 17 year old to have sex with her.
The article was not clear, but if the kids were having sex, their activity while against the rules of her dad, were legal in the eyes of the state.
What we don’t know is if the dad had implicitly prohibited the victim from entering the house. However, you cannot not go shooting everyone that your kid invites into the house and claim your kid’s friend is an intruder.
Had the daughter invited a friend over to make cupcakes in the kitchen, the dad could not shoot the friend and claim he was an intruder.
Like I said before, I don’t think the guy gets convicted but he may be bankrupted by the DA and a civil suit.
“It was “overnight hours and this was a “guest bedroom” dad went to investigate. The suspect did not respond to warning...And then comes bursting out of a guest closet?”
I get that and have said the dad won’t get convicted.
However, I would not recommend going Dirty Harry on the people your kid invites into the home.
Guilty.
This dad was a hot head moron.
But according to the report, that’s not what happened here.
You have life down to a computerized set of numbers that can be inputted and determined by a chart.
Come in to MY daughter's room and I'll shoot YOUR ass too !
My home, my castle, my daughter, my sovereign and I was just awakened by my (well loved and loyal) dog.
I announced
You stayed silent.
Now you BE silent.
comments as stupid as this give Free Republic a bad reputation, These were kids. The dad acted like a moron.
Minor has no legal rights to invite anyone over. Sad story.
