HOW MUCH PEE IS IN THIS POOL? CHEMISTRY HAS ANSWERS, IF YOU DARE

Do you want to know how much pee you're swimming in? A scientist at the University of Alberta has some answers for you. (Those who wish to remain blissfully ignorant, keep scrolling.)

So, do you still want to know how much pee is in a pool? Well, assuming you’re swimming in a standard eight-lane, 25 yard pool, which holds approximately 220,000 gallons of water, you’re also swimming in about 20 gallons of urine. Your best friend’s backyard pool, which likely measures around 20 feet long by 40 feet wide at about five feet deep, probably contains “only” two gallons of pee. In either case, this translates to approximately 1/100th of 1% of the pool’s total volume. Peanuts, right? Well, it turns out it’s not that simple.

Yeah, I was thinking I prefer our old swimming hole with the fish nibbling on me in the deep end. A public pool full of chemicals and urine from people on who knows what type of prescription medication - no thanks. It’s the creek, pond, lake or ocean for me.

This is silly. For one, pee and sweat are the same thing. So you don’t have to pee in a pool. Your sweat is always washed off. If you are laying in the hot sun and jump in the pool your urine is in the water. But besides that. A pool also sits in the sun and it evaporates all the time. New water is added so the pee is diluted over time. Also the chlorine does rid the pee of live organisms. So there really isn’t much about the pee that is unhealthy.

We have had pools for over a century and there is little evidence of health issues over that time.

I often wonder what’s in the water at my cottage on Lake Erie. Somehow I think pee would be the least of our worries.

A question that was asked fifty years ago...

Why is it OK to pee in a pool if you are already in the pool, but not OK if you stand on the edge and pee into the pool?

Uric Acid ... pretty easy and well established test for that.

I happened to have attended a school in the desert Southwest where the center of active "Student Life" was a large outdoor pool (and a bar in an airplane hangar). They had to close, drain, disinfect, and then refill the pool over a two week period after some blind drunk co-scholars of mine decided to use the pool as a giant urinal. I've always suspected somebody bragged, or told what they saw from their dorm windows, and that's why they checked the Uric Acid level. But we were told the result was "over the acceptable limit".

Bigger question, considering that urine is completely sterile and that in a public pool, I mean, let's get real, kids don't get out of pools to whiz, why be concerned? Ever swim in a lake or ocean? Up to your eyeballs in fish s***. To me this is just one more thing the panic mongers will try and use to make everybody hyperventilate. Reason? Panicked people are much easier to control.

FYI unless you have a bladder infection urine is sterile.

So someone with a bladder infection pees perfectly sterile urine?

My sister used to have stories about the public pools in Corona, CA (lots of illegals) that had very visible turds rolling around on the bottom of the pool. Stopped taking her boys there quickly.

She somehow lost all those memories of telling me about thatn later life as she became a moonbat liberal.

20 / 220,000 = 0.0009090909090 parts urine to one part water.

My gramps used to drop Baby Ruth candy bars in the public pool when he was a kid. You know what they look like floating around.

Peter La Fleur: [after Patches hits Justin in the face with a wrench] Yeah, uh, Patches... are you sure that this is completely necessary?
Patches O’Houlihan: Necessary? Is it necessary for me to drink my own urine?
Peter La Fleur: Probably not.
Patches O’Houlihan: No, but I do it anyway because it’s sterile and I like the taste.
Peter La Fleur: ...Okay.

And this doesn’t even count what’s contributed by the numerous frogs, several chipmunks, and occasional squirrel I have to fish out of the pool every summer - but we use lots of chlorine and have a good filter system - I hope.....

Actually pee is a lot cleaner than sweat.

This story still gives me the creeps though.

Working as a security guard at beach resorts absolutely cured me of any desire to even put my toe in a swimming pool. Part of my job was to report excrement seen in the pool.
