Girl power! Mysterious ancient human society was run by a 'female elite' and lived in sprawling stone mansions
...
The bodies were placed in sequential tombs over a 330 year period and spanned multiple generations.
The finds reveal that a high degree of social differentiation and societal complexity existed in Chaco by the early 9th century.
'All societies are complex, but here we see a society with larger populations living in villages and cities and where major differences in status and wealth are evident,' Professor Kennett told MailOnline.
...
The Chacoans, one of North Americas earliest complex societies, lived in massive, multi-storied masonry buildings, known as 'great houses'.
Pueblo Bonito is the largest of these great houses with over 800 rooms.
The Chacoans occupied the structure between AD 828 and 1126.
One hundred and eleven pottery jars have been found in Pueblo Bonito's sprawl of public and ceremonial rooms.
The great house also contains elaborate burial chambers including 'Room 33' used by the Pennsylvania team for their research.
Room 33 was a chamber used to bury a high-status member of the Chacoan community and their descendants.
The team found multiple bodies in the chamber which they genetically analysed, finding that for 330 years power was passed from female to female.

The canyon contains large-scale public and ceremonial buildings with intricate architecture, suggesting that the culture thrived as a complex society a thousand years ago.
Using masonry techniques unique for their time, the Chacoan constructed many 'Great Houses' with multiple stories containing hundreds of rooms.
The buildings were planned from the start, in contrast to the usual practices of adding rooms to existing structures as needed.
Constructions on some of these buildings spanned decades and even centuries.

I refused to believe a word of this nonsense until they dug up the room...with all the shoes...
I upset her when I pointed out that, in such a society, the men had no incentive to stick around when the next band of barbarians came over the hill. With no permanence to keep them, the incentive to be to say "Y'know, I think there are some women who are just as cute as what I have available here, over that next hill".
The whole "turning the tent" situation would be disadvantageous to women over the long run. In a stable living situation, the man needs a good reason to move out. In a situation where he doesn't live with the women, she needs to daily give him a reason to show up. The closest modern example is the "inner city", where women live by themselves with their kids, and a "baby daddy" occasionally shows up.
Good one.
It just means that your family lineage, identity and history is determined by who your mother was.
Actually, Jewish custom is very similar.
As a famous Jewish commenter once said., it's 100% certain who your mother was - your father, not so much.
Obviously didn’t work out or they would still be here today.

Ahhh, Laz. You’re living several civilizations too late.
If only....
Sister wives everyone of them.
There was a man there for sure.

...But its also possible that the remains represent the experience of just one elite family, and not all of Chacoan society...
I’ve been to Chaco Canyon four or five times. It is interesting to say the least.
HOWEVER, there is strong evidence that very few people ever lived in the massive complex. It may have really been a central religious/ceremonial complex or a so-called “food distribution center.” There has been recent work done on the astronomical aspect of the complex, in particular there is one geological butte that has the equinox and solstice designations found commonly elsewhere.
I am skeptical of this particular article.
"elite status was passed down through the maternal line from 800-1130AD."
I wonder what the US will be like 330 years after giving women the right to vote.
yessssssssss... slo motion.....
So, they admit the society was rife with inequality, and now it’s gone. That’s my takeaway.
Snoo-snoo all the men to death, then you got no more civilization.
I’m taking that.
The look on that guy’s face says: “Go ahead. Make a comment. I dare you.”
Hahahahahahahahahaha...I love the little high-five!
