VATICAN CITY (AP) — Look out, Lady Gaga. The pope is joining the Super Bowl frenzy.

Pope Francis has recorded a video message that will be shown during Sunday's Super Bowl game between the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons.

A Vatican spokesman says the message is expected to be played on the screen at NRG Stadium in Houston either before the game or during the first quarter.

In the message, the pope says he hopes the Super Bowl will be "a sign of peace, friendship and solidarity for the world."

Francis is an avid sports fan who often speaks of how sports can bring about social change. He has previously taken to Twitter for the Olympics and soccer's World Cup. This is his first Super Bowl message.

Peace??? First of all....the game is a battle in itself...likened to battling the lions in Rome of old.

Nothing peaceful about it.

Is the Pope looking for a cut of the gate??

I can't imagine him being an athlete in any way.

Hope the Pope enjoys whatever stunt Madonna pulls.

Get with the program. The Spirit has spoken through Pope Francis. The only people who care what the Gospels actually say are rigid cowards who are afraid of change.

If an actual, believing Christian (for instance, Franklin Graham) had somehow managed to get a message broadcast during the Super Bowl, you'd never hear the end of the shrieking and hair-rending.

But Pope Francis? Break out the pom poms, woo-hoo. That's because he plays for their team.

Last year Obama, this year the pope. Very telling.

Who is responsible for this?

A while back they made a show of letting in 5, or 10, but only after extreme vetting (no muslims ---only persecuted Christians instead, etc., and of that kind ---'Catholics' only).

I won't be watching, so I'm safe. I didn't see Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction either...thank God.

The Pope is a lefty, a fascist who uses his church’s organization to attempt the dissolution of US borders.

Anything he says to me is automatically devoid of any sacred quality; he is nothing but blather , bun and holy boast.

Pope - Superbowl...How wildly inappropriate.

Next up the Muslim Brotherhood Grand Imam?

Pope just gotta pimp his Communism message - “Solidarity for the world.” To Hell in a handbasket, and all prophesied.

You are right. POLITI-POPE!

No doubt the Politi-Pope will talk about how we are all "one people" in "one world" deserving to go anyplace we see fit regardless of our religion, blah blah blah..

Thank you. He needs prayers, as does the Church.

When I saw the headline, I was hoping to read that he was announcing plans to step down.
