What is your opinion on this article?
If Hollywood hadn’t bought of politicians to keep extending copyrights, they would’ve gone bust (or become more responsive to the current market) long ago.
As it stands, they stay solvent on 80 years of talkies, many with no residuals. Those “classics” allow them to take a loss on political message films that serve an agenda over corporate interests.
Another factor is websites like viki.com and dramafever.com which show good foreign shows, especially KDramas. Who needs that dreck from Hollywood anymore?
Let’s locate the muslim refugees to hollywood, Bel air, Malibu beach, Martha’s vineyard.
Hollywood’s been over for 30 years in my house.
Hell it’s not even real dreck anymore, it’s machine-animated dreck. Virtual dreck, one might say.
My money $pend$. I won’t spend it stupidly.
HollyWEIRD has always been leftist..that is why if you are a Conservative in Hollyweird you have to hide it otherwise you lose your job and are blacklisted..the same Hollywood leftist crowd who LOVES open borders would not want these people living next door to them..let’s drop off some refugees in front of Ashton Kutcher’s house or Julia Louis Dreyfuss’s house..I guarantee you they would call the Beverly Hills PD and demand they get removed
This is also why we now have TCM. Back in the late 1980s, I’d go to the movie theatres often and rent movies (Dad’s Beta machine, lol) as well and I also subscribed to Premiere magazine. Hard to believe I did all that back then when considering what Hollywood is like now.
I'm not saying he's not good, not a pro. But there's nothing in it that a person who's paying attention isn't already aware of.
Netflix and Amazon are producing content, with Facebook on deck to do so. CGI and AI are making the traditional motion picture craft obsolete, along with their unionized workforce and its ridiculous work rules. Barriers to entry are falling, let a hundred flowers bloom.
A deep-think piece for the Vanity Fair set, I suppose.
Proud to say I haven’t been to a movie theater for, oh, probably 7 or 8 years.
I have watched a few news clips of the awards shows, and there must be one a week. The “stars” (females) don’t really appear to be any prettier than the average female you see on the streets. The males all look metrosexual, with their little sissy beards.
Hollywood as we knew it died with John Wayne. It’s been gone for years.
While agreeing in large part with the author of the article, the reality is 98% of current Hollywood product is unwatchable garbage to much of the public. Seeing this tribe of morons dance and chant their lunatic political mantras is laughable.
I’m ignorant about a lot of this. I have a netflix account but beyond that I don’t know much. I don’t even have a smart phone or tablet.
Been longer than that for me. If I see something I might like I just wait to see if it will eventually make it to netflix. I looked through all of the movies at a Red Box once are there where none that interested me. I like TCM.
Excellent essay. Thanks. From the author: “The real winners, however, are the consumers. We wont have to pay $50 to go to the movies on a date night, and well be able to watch what we want to watch, when we want, and, most important, where we want.”
Movies and tv shows from Hollywood (Burbank, Culver City, Hollywood) are losing money and computer companies in Silicon Valley (Santa Clara, Cupertino, Fremont) are gaining money. Netflix got 56 nominations. Nuff said.
