For decades, bars along Bourbon Street have had an open-door policy, enticing anyone over 21 to walk in at all hours with drink specials, blaring music and neon lights. Come in, order a drink and carry it back out to the street, if you like.
City and state officials want to put an end to this easy access, and they are proposing the bars close their doors at 3 a.m. -- but remain open for business -- in an effort to curb violence that has stained the city's image.
"I don't see what the point is in it," said Earl Bernhardt, owner of Tropical Isle and other clubs on and near Bourbon. He worries the policy might affect his bottom line. "We do a lot of business after 3 o'clock."

New Orleans is a 24/7 place. Why bother to go there if they start closing places down at 3. Besides, comparatively the French Quarter is a low crime area.
Another thing, crime used to be lower in The Quarter before they started tying the hands of the NOPD and before the State Troopers came in.
Crime low in the Quarter? I worked with someone in the credit card business, who told me that disproportionate numbers of lost credit cards, pickpocket victims, were reported from the French Quarter. Just what he told me.
play classical music. The crimes will cease.
Agreed.
And they’re not being honest with themselves. It’s not the mostly white young people partying on Bourbon Street causing most the violence in New Orleans.
There’s an elephant in the room and no one wants to see it. Sort of like all the violence in Chicago.
I’m sorry, I meant to say violent crime. Petty crime is a real problem there.
I don’t doubt you but I believe their concern is violent crime.
Yes the locals do. There is a lot of street justice in New Orleans.
What, did they just fly in from 5 time zones away?
Yes, of course. Because nothing bad could happen between midnight and three.
It’s the gangstas and the local cops know who they are but unlike in the old days the cops can’t go pro-active on their butts. And all these gangstas know it.

In some cases yes. You meet people from all over in the quarter. I'm old now but a lot of the bars sell good food and there are always places open to get real good or fast food. We used to go from bar to bar all night and into the morning dawn. But we always ate and drank water while we did it. We also stayed aware of our surroundings. We might go to 20 or more bars in a night easy.
I was on Bourbon one night after a Greek festival. All the bar owners were trying to close down without admitting they were closing down because in insane fashion, the local government didn’t want them to close down because closing down meant RACISM. Poor bar owners in that very great city.
Closing the Big easy should reduce crime there.
“What, did they just fly in from 5 time zones away? “
Last time I was there at 3am we were just getting warmed up. We left the hotel at 11:30. Thing with Bourbon Street is like all cities. Stay on well lit streets with a lot of people and there will not be a problem. Veer off onto a side street and you become a target.
Sure it is.
I meant to type low violent crime area. Lots of petty crime though if you don’t pay attention.
It's quite simple, Mr. Bernhardt, liberals want to control every aspect of your life.
Well the libs have already managed to ban smoking in all bars, casinos, restaurants etc. in Orleans parish. Why not this?
