Burns Night, held in honour of Scotland's most famous poet Robert Burns, is celebrated at the end of January every year – but what is is all about?

The night is a way to remember the life of the 18th century bard and it falls on his birthday – January 25.

Robert Burns wrote Auld Lang Syne ... sort of

Robert Burns didn't invent "Auld Lang Syne" as we know it, rather he was the first person to write down a much older Scottish folk song.

The full ritual of the night involves whisky, haggis and poetry readings.

Once all the fanfare is over, the guests toast the haggis and tuck in.

Yes, I know many want to skip the preliminaries and go for the Scotch.

Any man making the toast should tread with care, since it is followed by a reply from the women.

The pic of Cranachan looked good!

So I took a look:
Cranachan is a traditional Scottish dessert. In modern times it is usually made from a mixture of whipped cream, whisky, honey and fresh raspberries, with toasted oatmeal soaked overnight in a little bit of whisky.

... and if you’re out of cream, honey, or raspberries, it’s ok.

The best haggis recipe is any one where the last step is “Dump it in the rubbish bin”.

If I had known he and I shared a birthdate, we could have used that verse as we prepared to enjoy my family birthday lunch.

Sadly, methinks it will not come to pass.

From wiki:
In 1971 it became illegal to import haggis into the US from the UK due to a ban on food containing sheep lung, which constitutes 10 to 15% of the traditional recipe.[26] The situation was further complicated in 1989 when all UK beef and lamb was banned from importation to the US due to a BSE crisis.[26] In 2010 a spokeswoman for the US Department of Agriculture stated that they were reviewing the ban on beef and lamb products, but that the ban on food containing sheep lung would remain in force.

But not all bad news:
Following his victory in The Masters golf tournament in 1988, Scottish golfer Sandy Lyle served haggis at the annual Champions Dinner before the 1989 Masters.
