Ever since the second to last site crash/downtime, freerepublic pages have exhibited very long load times, probably 70% of the time.
Some have already mentioned this issue in other threads. I did a couple of simple checks on my browser and it appears that external content, e.g. images or animated GIFs exacerbate the problem, but tonight, I am seeing the issue on the main index page, which doesn't load any external content at all.
I am seeing load times on the main page exceed 60 seconds. On pages that have images, load times are 80-120 seconds plus.
Anyone else seeing this behavior, and can they corroborate that the behavior started occurring after the second to last site crash?
I am using Firefox v50.1.0, build 20161208153507. The issue also occurs in Chrome v55.0.2883.95 (64-bit).
This is not a complaint, just hoping the mods and/or JimRob might read this and it will serve to give some more clues as to what is going on with the site.
Its actually been doing it since the previous crash a little while ago. Of course, i have my prefs set to load 250 comments per page, so it is more noticeable.
Yup, on all of my computers.
That works, yes, but it exacerbates the underlying problem, since each of those "refresh" hits is yet another request to JohnRob's database server that is already on its knees begging for mercy. Each of those requests has to be answered, and they get queued up ad infinitum and eventually shuffle out to the ozone. So while it's true that you eventually get a faster page load, the rest of us suffer more.
I am getting some unaccustomed delay but it is only a few seconds, maybe 5 or 6.
Check out these two posts regarding cause of the crash and future updates:

Would it help if Freepers deleted some of their comments?
How do I delete old, redundant comments?
Happens in one form or another every Freepathon.

They love the ability to use FR but think others should pay for it. I bet if everyone using FR to post were to donate regularly, Jim might be able to do what it takes to keep the data bits moving
60mbs, wifi router - does not matter what speed. It is a server problem, and perhaps also due to the seemingly antique code used to make the site. Code problem shown by the lag rendering the sidebar, and post reply. There is server problem shown by the advise to lower one’s site preferences; this lowers the load on it, I believe.
FR is due for a code modernization and a server upgrade of some sort; this does not mean that the appearance or functionality has to change.
Perhaps Jim and John could start a separate fund raising just to fix these problems. Then again I could be ‘all wet’.
No doubt about it, the page load delays are annoying, which is why I said maybe some new hardware, when you said overhaul I thought you meant a new format.
Ha. I remember when you used to be able to get some sites to switch to "Pirate" from English. Was a hoot.
