Freerepublic 2.0

Posted on 01/23/2017 6:44:04 PM PST by big bad easter bunny

Freerepublic was down during not the most important time of Trump but certainly the most interesting time with no explanation of why, personally I am disappointed of having been given zero explanation, this site is sorta about exposing what went wrong. So if we don't get to hear why one of the most important websites was off line, we should at the very least should have a conversation on what to do to prevent it again from happening, Drudge has gone down a few times recently, he has way more than 250K yearly, we should, in my opinion discuss ways to keep freerepublic up under all attacks!

It’s an interesting site. Lots of former freepers there. Seemed more concerned about trashing Trump than Hillary or Obama. It wasn’t like that a couple years ago when I read there. Lots of Cruz supporters there now.

That’s where some of the butt-hurt Cruzers went.

Well, I’m glad we’re back on line. I went to other sites for the Inauguration but I did miss the pithy commentary from you folks.

FREE REPUBLIC is starting to act a bit wonky again on my computer. It’s taking a long time to load the articles.

Is anyone else having problems?

Read what your browser window says...freerepulic.com

That's the web address. The name of this site is Free Republic.

I don’t have experience with Azure, but we run our own private cloud and one thing is nice is that all the virtual servers can be managed remotely. There are occasions when we have to run to the datacenter, but more often than not it’s remote activity.

One thing nice about virtual servers, if necessary you can evacuate virtual machines to a standby host with no downtime if you have a host that is problematic.

I might have to look into Azure more heavily. I’ve heard very good thing about it.

That’s right. Jim should have personally pinged him to give him a full briefing. Comments like yours make my day. :-).

Apparently whiners and bedwetters exist on both the left and right side of the political spectrum. A website goes down for a few days and they are absolutely lost and do not know how to handle it. Of course if they are REAL concerned they can pony up and send Jim some more money.

I pay $120 a year for a subscription or maybe more

I was not aware of any such a thing as a "subscription" to Free Republic.

For over ten years I've advocated a small annual charge, $10 dollars and if we have 40,000 people signup then FR could run a single, annual Freepathon, raise more revenue, and buy more equipment etc.

I have no way of knowing, but over the years, I've read that FR has over 200,000 lurkers, if that is true, 20% should kick in a lousy $10 a year.

This wasn’t the first time. If a big news event happens, I find myself saying to myself, “And FR is down in 3,2,1...”.

i.e. I was literally wondering when it would crash.

Every other site I post on (musicians, cars, tractors, hi-fi gear among others) has completely changed their software at least once and a few of them twice since I started posting on them. Like MS Word, first you hate the ribbon, then you love it.

FR is still like using DOS, relatively speaking. But I’m used to it (been here since 1998). But I’ve learned to find other sources where I can also comment. i.e. when FR went down I was not really impacted. I was already getting information from other places.

It this exact attitude that is pissing people off. Valid criticizism of of the how the site reliability is engineered is treated like marxism. You might be technically right about contributing and paying as definitions go but practically as many of us who also do this for a living you really quite wrong. My bank account also doesn't seem to know the difference.

And that take it or leave it attritude s surrounding this technical champagne is total BS. Jim Robinson and crew need to explore their options an expand their skill set. There are options

I was not aware of any such a thing as a "subscription" to Free Republic.

humblegunner, I was just using that term. It is a voluntary subscription. It is the monthly amount I have on auto debit on my card for FR. I think of it as my subscription in the same way that I subscribe to other paid access sites, although in this case it is voluntary and not behind a pay wall. But I compare it dollar-wise in my mind to other subscriptions and memberships.

Reno89519, I agree with your comments — redundancy, rollover, remote management of virtual servers, all that stuff. I was just saying that for someone to have to physically drive hours to spend days physically working on a server — it just seems very old-fashioned to me. But every time someone makes a comment along these lines, it’s just like being a Never Trumper, you get rudely squelched by a whole lot of defensive and aggressive posters.

I also wonder how many post here without “contributing” if that is the politically correct term for it. With very few exceptions, ALL those people should be chipping in or should be ashamed of themselves! I even think regular readers, even if they don’t have a screen name or log in, should chip in, if they are on here every day reading. But if there are any who post here, but don’t “contribute” i.e. pay at all, they are not acting consistently with their conservative values as far as I can see! Do they believe in something for nothing?

It would be interesting if there were a little symbol, like an asterisk, by any screen name that contributes. I guess that would be very hard to program. But it would be interesting.
