I have to change the size and ppi of an image of my husband in photoshop because he is presenting at a conference. I am supposed to have it to them within the next few hours, and I am stuck! It is currently 5.042w x 7.68h at 72ppi. It is supposed to be 2.5w x 3.5h, 300ppi at 100%. I opened up the photo in PS, and then clicked on "new" so I could make the changes, but when I do that his picture disappears and a white page loads. I am pulling my hair out...any help would be SO GREATLY APPRECIATED!
Under image on the menu choose image size and select the size you want. going smaller is great going larger will cause pixilation.
Are you using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements? If PSE I can probably help.
When you click new you’re basically creating a new canvas. Click on open..that will give you the option to select a picture from your computer
How To Reduce Image Size without Losing Image Quality in Photoshop
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VC3F0HQH9J4
Very easy to do in Irfanview under Image/resize/resample
With the image open in PS, choose Image > Image size (or shortcut Shift + Ctrl + I) then set your desired witdth & height in inches, and change your resolution to something higher, like no less than 300 but no more than 600 pixels/inch
Then you’ll need to find “re-size” option...mine is under image on elements 12
Yes you are faking it when you increase the resolution, but for an image that small it will be fine.

You should have a pull down menu that will allow you to select the size in inches instead of pixels. You can type in one size and it will complement it with the other size.
That way you can directly size the image to fit without calculating.
Then you need to check the dpi again. When you resize it sometimes tries to change the dpi when you make the size adjustment.
It has been a while since I used photoshop. Had several versions of Adobe Suites.
All I use now is GIMP. It’s free and opensource and will do anything I ever need to do. And it takes a lot less resources to run.
Load the original.
Resample/resize and do a ‘save as’ rather than a ‘save’.
That would retain the original and allow you to give the ‘save as’ a new name.
Did you figure it out? If not, upload the original to IMGUR or another photo-sharing site and post it here. I’ll fix it for you and post it back.
When you click “new” you’re creating a new, blank document. There is no need to do this. Just go and change the image size to 300 dpi at the dimension required and save it under a different file name.
The image is being reduced in dimension while resolution is being increased so it’s not going to be quite that bad, although 300 dpi is print resolution so any artifacts or blurriness will be very evident in lithographic printing.
Hello Everyone, you are all so awesome! I am still struggling, if someone wants to do it for me, I would be forever grateful. :) Just post and I will PM you the photo, and I will owe you one. I am a registered dietitian, so I can help you out with anything you might need in that arena.
I am going to upload it in about two minutes. THANK YOU!
Do you have the original?
Going from 300 to 72 is ok. The other way, not so much. If you drop the picture 50 in size, the best resolution you are going to get is 150dpi. The difference means that the computer is going to “guess” what pixels come in between.
Sure, it’s small, but it’s going to look “mushy.”
