The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.
From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Emergency Essentials catalog came in today, and has a big sale, so that's on the table for later. Winter gardening is just watering right now. The weather will be back to 50s on Monday, so if it doesn't rain, I may plant a few pots of herbs and lettuce to grow.
Hope all is well with you. Have a great weekend. Prayers up for all. God Bless.
Pinging the list.

Two days thaw...and the temps are plunging again tonight.
My sis has a gig about 20 miles away, and i always support her shows...but I hate being out in the cold alone at night.
The things we do for love!
Miss Greeneyes, Have you planted any of your lemon seeds?
Hi, Green-eyed,
I have gotten two seed catalogues. After a night of temps in the teens last week, and frozen pipes, it is amazing how those catalogues get me ready to start digging in the dirt.
Thinking of one of our gardeners who left us January 22, 2016.
JRandomFreeper, you are missed. RIP.
I hate autocorrect!. I typed Greeneyes, not Greeneyed.
Can you add me to the list?
Oh so true! Your sister is very blessed to have you :)
I'll tell you something very un-American, I just can't stand baseball. But some of my grandkids play. It's pretty much given that I go for them when I can. (The ones who play live 900 miles away) But, my little brother is a high school baseball coach (180 miles away) and I go to his team's games whenever I'm able also. I'm just so proud of the job he does teaching those young people to be good sports. I get joy out of watching brother's love of the game and those kiddos even if I'd rather be watching a tomato turn ripe. LOL
I’m OK with baseball, but i don’t like football.
I hope that doesn’t get me banned! hahaha
Brave and dedicated. I won’t go out when it’s cold, and I almost never go anywhere after dark, even if it’s a nice summer night.
No I have never done that. I have thought about it, but if they grew, I wouldn’t have space for another tree.
Well...at least it is not snowing.
I do miss him so much and Marcella, and Rightly too.
Rightly got involved with a local gardening group and was hanging out at their facebook page. Marcella got a guy and didn’t post as much- she and Rightly used to post almost daily along with Johnny.
During the last election cycle/purge Marcella decided to join another website after a particularly rude thread around about the time that Johnny was dying.
The year that Marcella and Johnny joined the thread was the most enjoyable entertainment that I ever had on the computer. I do miss them all-such great humorists.
Yes. I post on Friday afternoon or evening. If you don’t get a ping next week, send me a FRmail.
I’d rather have snow than ice. Ice on trees is when the electric goes out, but at least that gave me the chance to insist that hubby test the generator and stock up some gasoline- been requesting that politely since fall. LOL
I miss him too. I changed my tagline when he passed. Not quite ready to change it again.
I’ve been wondering how Marcella is. Ok I hope.
The worst thing about either is that I can’t ride my Harley.
I have all of the garden in a nice crop of winter wheat except for 3 double rows of garlic. The garlic has been doing well, except that now I have deer that have started coming in to eat the wheat, but they’re also tasting the garlic, usually all the way down to the soil, making it nearly impossible for those bulbs to recover.
A couple weeks ago I did some online research for a deer repellant that might actually work. Found one called “Deer Stopper”, made by Messina Wildlife Management. The active ingredients are putrescent whole egg solids, rosemary oil, and mint oil. Of course the day after I applied it, there were a series of rain storms that moved through, so I can’t really be objective on whether the stuff really works. I read that it stays on even through a rain, but such didn’t seem to be the case. Now, I’ve put more on, and last night the deer returned and I didn’t see that they did any new damage, so maybe it does work!
Meanwhile, I only have a 3 foot chicken wire fence around the garden supported by rebar posts. I’ve started welding 5 foot extension pieces onto the existing rebar posts to eventually raise the fence level to 8 foot. Unfortunately I have two environazi/libtard neighbors so harvesting the deer isn’t an option.
