I don’t have a problem with the fine looking lady on this coin. I am not a big fan of the stars of Libery’s headpiece however, they look a little too flat benefit by looking like the ones on US Army’s general star pins. The eagle on the back is very nice and doesn’t look like a butched-up songbird.

The only problem I have with a lot of government art is that the majority of it is heavy-handed, anti-American, rub-it-in-your-face, guilt porn.

“Gee, that makes a lot of sense. What idiot would buy this?”

People collect them. People buy them to store wealth. It’s still gold, it’s not like you’d be forced to spend/redeem it for “face value.”

Somebody’s not thinking the possible symbolic interpretations through, or maybe they are. Liberty enslaved?

Agreed. Our nation consists of a variety of ethnicities. It’s good to see this diversity reflected in our coinage.

Other than the concepts and precepts of personal liberty as modernly understood have absolutely no connection to the african continent at all, and are purely a product of western civilization.

Seem like pandering to me.

These types of coins are sold at a profit to Numismatics like myself. If they don’t have a high circulation, the value could go up and be a good investment that is tax free.

An example is the 1909 S Lincoln Wheat Cent coin (value and prices are based on condition/grade):

The idea that Lady Liberty is a black woman isn’t new or unusual. Indeed, it’s not a great stretch at all to come to that conclusion.

I was going to ask how do you tell it’s a black women on a gold coin...

You answered my question, unless that is a engraving of Bo Derek...: )

I think the image is pretty. However, if there was some sort of line-drawing psychological test and you said that depicted a black woman, you’d be told that anyone, of any race, can have dreadlocks and lips slightly wider than some Germans’, and what a racist you are.

And how come the Mooch isn’t on the coin? Is there a bias against wookie-Americans?
