The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.
From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Thanks for the info.
That’s an interesting point. We have almost zero rules about building anything in this county, so I would be surprised if it matters, but still a good thing to check. Thanks.
How was the productivity ?
Heirlooms or hybrids ?
Do you believe the plants were 'hardier' as a result ?
That's an interesting experiment.. Where did you gt the idea ?
That is an interesting idea. I would like to know the answers too. Quite a few of my plants were spindly last year and this might be a good idea. Also, I got many started late, and this would be a way to get them going when nature decides.
I tried looking up winter gardening but it addresses green houses, lights, cold frames etc.
That is not feasible for us at the moment.
But I’m interested in the starting seeds in before the winter thing.
How does that work more specifically? Do I sow them just like I would in the spring and just leave the pots outside for the winter and let nature take its course in the spring?

Looks like I have some reading to do now! No problem, I know how to cut-and-paste :-)
But I’ll do the reading tomorrow, there’s snow on the ground and it just makes me feel colder even though the temperature inside is the same. So I’m heading to bed early. Have a good night tik!
Certainly. I loved that site, not so much since it’s Houzz or whatever. It pretty much killed the local/state gardening forums. The archives are pretty great though.
Thank you.
Winter sowing is going to get you different results than winter gardening.
Per the radar, we are overrun with snow right now, but nothing is getting to ground level - I did see some tiny flakes & mini-flurries while filling up the bird feeders around 4:30 (for the first time this winter). When I looked out the window this morning, a dove couple was hanging around - I’m sure they were the ‘lovebirds’ I saw every day last winter & were looking to see if there was any food at the feeders yet. Since snow is forecast (6-8”), I figured some black oil sunflower seeds would definitely make the birds happy. To the east, the forecast is for blizzard conditions - my brother may get 12-14” ... glad it’s not me!!
This morning I took a “trip” to FL via Onalee’s seeds at http://www.onaleeseeds.com/ . I ordered several packages of Hyacinth Bean Vine (purple) & my free seed packet will be the white HBVs. I gave seeds away last year to a couple of friends and not a single one came up for them (or for me). The seeds were from my dear aunt who puts EVERYTHING in the freezer .... including all her seeds. HBV is a tropical plant (frost kills it, pronto) so I’m guessing that’s why the seeds didn’t come up. All the friends who got formerly frozen seeds will get a fresh pack from FL & we’ll see what happens.
The website is fun to browse through - lots of flowers/plants to look at. My seeds went in the mail this afternoon & from reading customer comments, Onalee’s is first rate. I liked reading about her garden helper, Bob .... we have a similar garden helper next door - especially good at digging holes where he thinks there are moles. :-)
I got my original info from Gardenweb. Containers used all had lids, which kept out the wildlife. Lids had holes poked in to allow rain and air in. I had old tomato seeds, morning glories, squash, peppers, and some other flowers. In spring, when they started sprouting, took the lids off. Being Tennessee, we had some unplanned cold spells in between the warm days. This did not kill my hardy seedlings. Made the mistake of planting too many seeds per container so I lost some when separating. Veggies and flowers grew to be nice looking plants. My porch gets a lot of sun but if I try it again, will choose a wind protected area of the yard for the containers.
Yes, I hear you’re really going to get a whopper. Most of the storms that hit you have lessoned by the time they travel down to us. You take the brunt of it.
The last two weeks of rain were the first in ages in SoCal. Huge trees were starting to die off and many have toppled over in the wind now that it has finally rained.
“lessened” Whoops!
We are already 10” ahead of “normal” for this season. The Crab fishermen have agreed to a price with the processors and their will be some who will head out tomorrow morning 1/7/17 to set pots under gale conditions
Thanks for the pics.
