Hi Jim, I didn't know how to email you privately so I'll use one of the more casual forums. This is not a new topic, I'm sure, but let me add my voice to whatever clamor there is to migrate Free Republic to a more modern forum software package, one that

1. Has functions which are easy to see/find and invoke

2. Allows easier upload of pictures

3. That allows email notification of replies to comments

4. That allows editing after a comment is posted

5. That has text editing features so one doesn't need to know HTML code in order to add emphasis.

6. That has a Search function for previous posts

7. That is easier to navigate to the specialty forums such as "Gods, Graves, Glyphs", which, had it not been mentioned in a random post, I never would have found here on FR.

This is the modern era, there are far, far better forum software packages out there. Free Republic may well experience a rapid growth in users post Trump victory. We'll want to make joining and participating fully in FR as easy as possible.

Reader View a viewing mode in Safari on the iPhone or iPad which strips away all of the banners, ads, popups, graphics, etc, leaving behind only the text, so that you don’t see all the other crap. It also does text reflow and lets you easily resize the text for reading. Its easy to invoke by tapping on the Reader View icon in the upper left corner of the browser. However, nearly all of the posts at FR cannot be used by mobile Safari, which makes reading the posts difficult. That is, the Reader View icon does not show up in the upper left corner at an FR post. Without Reader View, you have to pinch zoom and scroll around constantly - a real annoyance.

One might ask, why not use another browser? Well, Safari has hooks into iOS which gives it more speed and more features not available to other mobile browsers.

I vote no. I like the fact I can use FR through my proxy with lynx. Also the forums with the new whizbang javascript stuff are usually broken and/or slower. Javascript is crap, when FR does things on the server it is cleaner code, more reliable, and more secure. The only drawback is round trip server time but that’s rarely a problem.

I like the way FR works now as well. Most of this has been proposed by others over time, but most of it is also something that would ultimately make FR a lot more of a burden from a server load perspective.

About the only thing I’d recommend is an icon that shows if a poster is also a contributor. This particular idea has been thoroughly discussdd in some depth by Jim, and ultimately was decided against for various reasons. I’m still a fan of the idea, but JR is da boss of this site. He gets to make the rules.

A ‘like’ button would be fun but would ultimately be misused by trolls.

I agree. I’m happy with everything the way it is except I want to read and post from my phone which is way too arduous. Reading on FR is easy with the Opera Mini browser app, but writing a post?? Horrible. Nigh impossible.

I don’t care about editing afterward, you made a mistake, deal. An app for mobiles would make me very happy though!!!

Well I’m thinking more of grammar and spelling since there are people here just waiting to jump on someone’s post because of errors, missing words, etc etc. Or if it was a stupid post or erroneous post you’d might want to remove it.

If I can make my way thru the words and figure out what the word is supposed to be, I'm alright with that...What we need is an automatic ZOT for self appointed spelling police...
