Attended UCSB from ‘64-’68. Remember walking by the Computer Lab with the 360. Was later told that HAL from 2001 was just IBM minus one letter and the model number was the next model after the 360. The 360 filled a room. I tell kids that no one saw the computer and its child, the internet coming. We saw flying cars and all that but not the internet. Makes me wonder what the next big thing will be that we don’t see coming.

Yup. Me too. Around 83-84 doing PDP-11 RSX-11 Macro-Assembler was SO MUCH FUN!
Ah for the good ol’ days.

The nodes called "316 IMP" were Honeywell 316 minicomputers that were used as data concentrators, e.g. essentially a modem controller. The Honeywell Kitchen Computer was a variant of the 316 sold through Nieman Marcus, but alas, it was somewhat ahead of it's time. It cost $10,000 and required a 2 week training course, which may have been factors in limiting sales to...none.

Kinda like cell phone technology. I know someone who restored WW2 Army Jeep to its original military specs, complete with the original Motorola 2-way radio it came with. Motorola laid the groundwork for cell phone technologyas we know it during the war. Starting in the late 40’s improvements by the Israeli Army, the British (Phillips), the Scandinavians (Ericsson) and the Japanese cell phones eventually became technologically and economically feasible. Until then only VIP’S and a few well to do people could afford car phones.

I see LBL on that map but no UCB.

Awesome. My school was added added few years later. But I still needed a map like this (with a little more detail) to send email until the late 80s. (..!...!..!..!)
History is important everywhere. And lots of people do and even want to forget or ignore it.
