This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. LOL! My bathroom walls have been draped in plastic for six years. I might just order a bat house ready made. That way, I’ll only have to wait three or four years for him to nail it up. (As you might have guessed, my husband is a retired carpenter). ;-)

I believe you folks up north have allowed your weather to escape! It’s 16 degrees here in central Texas this morning. Please, I’m begging you, keep your weather penned in for the rest of this winter. Please!

It’s -4 here in the Quad Cities.
I am writing on the 19th , a day after a snow/sleet/rain and then freeze event (winter in Maine.) I had planned on roto-tilling and spreading fertilizer but alas I think I will put it off for ...oh?...a 100 days or so. Not complaining at all , we had such a great summer and fall in 2016 that winter is welcome with all of it’s beauty. One thing with the snow covered with a 1/4 inch of ice is “SNOW TUBING!” we are going tonight...will report if I break anything!
Maybe just this once you could hire a handyman to put up your bat house ;)

Saturday afternoon it was 81 here. Sunday morning was 22. There’s just no time to acclimate to that. Brrrrr.
Oddly enough, yesterday our kids in Wiscasset and Newburgh had warmer weather than us in Texas. Our daughter’s family in north Texas was coldest at 19, we were next coldest and the daughter in Alabama was even colder than the kids in Maine. That is freaky weather.
All I can say about the weather over the past weekend is somebody please make it stop!
We had yet another epic failure of road department management doing what they get paid to do. The weather guessers were guessing that Friday was going to bring bad weather, and it did bring bad weather, just a bit sooner than the weather guessers guessed. Freezing rain started a little before noon, but the pre-treat wasn’t done and the entire central part of the state turned into a giant skating rink, with the MoDoT-maintained roads being the worst.
Naturally, there was a giant freak-out and everyone decided to leave work early and try to go home, which was, for the most part, a really bad idea. I was out and about doing stuff and got caught in the traffic jam.
It took me 3hrs45mins to travel five miles on state road WW east out of Columbia. There were well over 100 vehicles off the road in that five mile stretch. The last of the kids that get home on school buses weren’t dropped off until after midnight.
And then it turned cold. And snowed. And then it got colder.
How much help does it take to pick/wash/grade/pack the produce of 1800 tomato plants?
I did 515 last summer and couldn’t keep up with them.
the tomatoes in the photos are for seeds in 2018, I will seed out the largest 20 or so and eat the rest, I harvested about 2500 seeds last winter that’s what I will soon be planting.
I will use the Florida weave and 18 inch stakes to support them once I plant them around the 15th of March. I will also set up low tunnel hoops so I can cover them with row covers on frosty nights.
I have a friend that farms several acres and uses the 20ft cattle panels for green beans, makes it very easy to pick them and you stay cool while you are doing it.
My daughter called on Friday to let us know how slick the roads were and that she was going to be really late getting home.

Augie, this will be the first year to grow these for fresh market sales, they should produce during May prior to my early June tomatoes. Last year I grew 2200 tomatoes (40 varieties) and spread them out so I would have tomatoes to sell throughout the year. There were a few weeks in late June and early July where I got overwhelmed, I was picking around 15 bushels every other day. My wife helps and we have a girl that helps at the market.
I have added 2000 strawberry plants this year so it’s going to be an intense growing season, it’s a great weight control plan as I usually lose over 30 pounds every summer. My dad retired this summer and wants to help and my wife has said she will help more, so I hope we can do it.
LOL! The rest of the week looks bearable...it’ll be in the low-30’s which will feel like a heat wave!
