Can YOU smell asparagus in your urine? It's all down to your genes
Daily Mail ^ | 13 Dec 2016 | ZARA RUBIN

The reason why some people can smell asparagus in their urine after they've eaten it and others can't has been discovered... A group of US scientists from a range of universities conducted research on 6,909 men and women of European-American descent...

Lead researcher Professor Lorelei Mucci, from Harvard University, said the findings could be due to 'modest women'. She said they may be loathed to admit they can smell the distinctive odour in their urine.

“I can laugh now, but I was quite worried when I ate beets as a teen with hypochondriac tendencies. I thought sure I was peeing blood...lol.”

I have a friend who experienced the same.

And beets don’t just make your pee red. It can be scary if you don’t know about it.

Called Beeturia.

I grew some beets that were very sweet and very ‘colorful’.

Based on the breadth of knowledge I've gained from this thread, I'm going to request a federal grant to research the physiological effects of beets, pineapples, and asparagus. lol/sarc

If its mushy, it is no longer asparagus. It WAS asparagus. I always grill it to al dente crunch.

Not all foods pass odors along to your urine. Foods that do include asparagus, coffee and some spices. Asparagus, one of the worst offenders...

If someone else borrowed my body for a day, I would know immediately upon urination if they had eaten asparagus.

But it’s just a distinctive smell. Not particularly good or bad... just recognizable.

You mean, gasp, I am normal? I must write to my brother!

We used to have peeing contests to see whose pee was purple quicker. I always won that.

Yes, and asparagus is very odorous. I love it. Along with artichokes, mangos, guavas, and lychee.

Asparagus.

Beets are another favorite veggie of mine, but they turn one’s urine red.<<<

8-Q I’ve never had that happen! I love beets and when I can, I eat a lot of them. I love fresh asparagus, too. The only time my urine changes color is when I take a pill that cleanses the urinary tract...and then it will turn orange. The only time I notice any difference in odor is if I am a little dehydrated.

That’s an interesting find about the asparagus...Did that happen to cost us a lost 6 billion to learn about?
