Why Time’s Trump cover is a subversive work of political art
Haraatz ^ | Dec 11 2016 | The Forward and Jake Romm

Taken together, these elements add up to a profound portrayal of anxiety for the coming years. We have the implicit placement of Trump in the mid-1900s (looking through the Time Magazine cover archives, no images really resemble this cover, save the one seen on the left [a purely visual comparison]). We have a suggestion of the scheming, sordid underside of power. We have the crumbling facade of wealth, which, like “The Picture of Dorian Gray” suggests more than just a physical deterioration.

Here's Trump with well-placed "M" as horns (actually horns are a symbol of power).

look at how we hoodwinked those suckers - Oh is that what this pose is all about, heightening the conspiratorial tone and complicity of the viewer? Definitely a conspiracy with the the ominous shadow lurking on the backdrop.

Who writes this stuff?

“I value the opinion of a self employed plumber more than a university employed “expert” PhD when it comes to politics.”

Especially since that plumber is highly likely to have served in the military, and the younger ones that served are likely to have been overseas in a hot zone, like my (wonderful) electrician, for example.

Somebody went through the trouble of rendering Trump’s face in half-shadow.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’m surprised they didn’t include that too - as obvious as the red horns and the shadow not produced by the lighting.
This article is just more Bull Shit.
We can learn several things from it: Trump purchased it, selected it for this pose and paid for it and he hose not to reupholster it, despite obvious signs of wear.
So Trump's business throws off enough cash that he can afford some luxuries that otherwise would belong in a museum. That chair represents the height of craftsmanship, design and quality materials. The wood is beautiful and beautifully and painstakingly carved by an old master craftsman.
Trump offsets the ornateness of the chair with a plain dark suit, white shirt and solid red tie. So this isn't about pomp, sitting on a throne in full regalia. Less is more, and contrasts the modern Trump with an old different but then valid view of the world.
As for the "Kodachrome" color - again this shows ignorance. The subdued tones, and bright highlights contrasting with deep shadow is reminiscent of the Dutch masters, e.g. Rembrandt.
Louis IV is not my taste, which runs more modern, but nothing about the chair or the pose is in bad taste.
ground[ing] the association between the sitter and the throne, thus solidifying the metonymy, and to heighten the sense of servitude in the viewer. The viewer must approach the monarch, the monarch does not rise for the viewer...In our post-monarchic time, the power of the throne is largely gone, but the power of a seated figure remains. The chair itself is unimportant, it is the act of sitting that matters. By placing a portrait in this tradition, the chair assumes the role of the throne, and the sitter the role of king (or queen) — the visual effect is the same.
This is more self-indulgent bullshit. Trump is supported by the populace but not the Congress or apparatchiks in D.C. (96% of whom, locally in D.C. voted against him). Turn on the people, lose the support of the people and Congress and the D.C. insiders will neuter his power in an instant.
I didn’t even notice the shadow until you mentioned it.
Being as the #fakenews is making negative stuff up, I’m going to try my hand at it, only in a positive vein.
Seeing that the shadow is behind TIME and his actual appearance in the chair is in front of “TIME” it may be depicting him as a “god,” existing before and after TIME.
The blurb is perfect on the cover, showing that as he steps into the Presidency that the country is indeed divided.
The look on his face, strong and a bit stern, shows his resolve in bringing the country back together, in essence “making America great again.”
That also shows of course that the country has become uber divided from Obama’s years at the helm.
The “dark” side if his face is interesting in that it is the left side of his face.
The leftists in this country show a deep darkness cast upon the country, so I see (spin lol) it symbolic of that fact.
And that Trump will do all he can to shine light onto that darkness.
Not bad. Like your positive take.
I would avoid the Leftst, confusing term #fakenews. It is just another sneaky and subtle Leftist term used to distract from their utter lies and distortion. The Lying Left.
The picture is pure subliminal propaganda.
Notice the following things about the picture:
• He has his back to you. As if he doesn’t care about you. He is secretively doing something nefarious, and you interrupted him.
• He is scowling/glaring at you. He is mean and angry. And he doesn’t like you.
• Half his face is in shadow and not visible. As if he is momentarily emerging from the shadows only to glare at you. He prefers to live and work in the darkness because that helps him do his evil deeds in secret.
• The back of the chair and the picture background, as well as his suit, are all uniformly dark, gray, black. Just like the policies and mood he will bring to the country.
• His head is placed perfectly beneath the “M” in Time so as to make it appear as if he has two large horns. He is a devil. He is evil.
The article is BS.
In fact this is a great depiction of Trump, with the old tattered back of the chair being the old worn way which is now behind him and us.
My take? Trump is looking back, as if to say, “Follow me, we’re moving forward to make America great again”.
Regardless of the political perceptions, this is a great portrait and I approve.
That’s a cool pic if you ask me.
Reminds me a little of that Rush Limbaugh pic from a few years ago. The one where he’s puffing the cigar in deep shadow like a sinister mafioso. The intent, presumably, was to make him look evil but Rush loved it and considers it one of his favorites. As one insightful freeper said, the thing about art is that the viewer gets a vote too when it comes to meaning. TIME may have intended something with the horns/bunny ears and stern pose, but there are other ways to see it.
