Here's why everyone is suddenly obsessed with a rubber boot that's been around since 1911

A old article, I know. But we can't cite AP, USA today, so this is the best I could do.

If this is a problem for you. Move on.

You probably noticed a lot of brown and tan rubber-bottomed foul weather shoes this season. Most likely, it's L.L. Bean's Bean Boot, which has undergone a popularity spike.

But they're not trendy on purpose. In fact, the boot has been in production — largely unmodified apart from slight changes for new technology — for more than 100 years.

Their popularity has waxed and waned during this time, but they've always endured. They're the unofficial mascot of L.L. Bean. But now, they're really thriving.

My hubby wears their walking shoes. He buys a new pair every couple of years just because they start to look ratty. It’s about the only shoe besides house shoes and UGGs that he wears.

We always called them duck shoes.

If someone mentioned to me “bean boot” I would not know what they were talking about.

these boots were very trendy 1974 -1985 Part of the popular preppie look which was the polar opposite of the Disco look. Went to the governah’s inaugural ball wearing my beanboots, my down jacket, and my formal gown.

LOL. You remind me of Mr. Prentis in Walpole, NH. He wore his Bermuda shorts all year long....even shoveling snow off his roof. Defines hardy.

I think the phrase *duck boot* came from the fact that the Double LL hunting boot was often used while duck hunting. And the rubber section has lines in it reminiscent of duck's feet

Mine had wonderful wool felt liners. On really cold days I upped to wool socks, too. Happy feet.

My wife and I prefer Muck rubber boots. No laces. None better when you have to tramp around in any kind of mess. My wife and I live on a farm in Florida where we raise Angus beef cattle.

It's hard to work around here without stepping into some "muck", if you get my drift.

You are right. Mucks are great. We each find what is best for our own circumstances.

As I mentioned upthread, the reason why I delighted in this article is b/c hipsters are *re-disovering* something that has been proven over the test of time. A homegrown product some have come to know and love.

And economically, Maine is so sadly in a hole, it's wonderful to see them get a well-deserved boost. Wicked good. :)

Are you excited about some of regs imposed on your family farm, may be eliminated, under Trump?

Most farm and ranch folks around here wear Muck boots or some variation. The LL. Bean boots have laces. That would be a mess lacing those things up every morning with cow shit all over them. I've never seen any down here in Florida.

I have been raising cattle for 6 years and am not aware of any regulations that limit what we do on the farm except, local county rules, like requiring a permit to burn our pastures in the spring or keeping the cow manure out of the one water ditch that runs through our land. Both are common sense rules that don't limit our operation.

I don't really concern myself with what the feds require. We only have 25 head. If I'm doing something they don't like or allow, I'm sure they'd show up on my doorstep. But otherwise, I am ignorant of or have just blithely ignored any rules or regs imposed by the feds.

The 800 cow dairy adjacent to us is probably hamstrung by regs however. Selling milk to the public subjects them to many more rules than I care to think about.
