These are snapshots from a range of 1970s adverts showing the most popular men's fashions of the day.
High-waist pants, skimpy briefs, synthetic fabrics and psychedelic patterns seem to be in vogue - looks more suited to the fancy dress parties of today.

Same here. I remember a lot of denim, striped shirts and plaid but not most of this stuff.

The worst decade for women’s hairstyles was the 80s.
The 70’s for women’s fashion wasn’t anywhere close to the awful men’s styles. Peasant blouses, bell bottom hip huggers, hot pants, and halter tops. I couldn’t afford a knitted vest so rummaged through granny’s yarn and learned to knit. It turned out ok but glad that fad is gone. Most everything I sewed myself starting in 6th grade. I remember a green and black poncho with yellow pompoms, lol. There was a red, white and blue striped pantsuit that was very stylish. And culottes. A friend gave me a Keep on Truckin’ t-shirt for my birthday that was the coolest. I still have my blue Gunne Sax prom dress!
Nobody really wore that stuff.
Men wore bell-bottom jeans, and some of the shirts; those faded blue workshirts with jeans were popular. But the other stuff you’d only see performers wearing on television; and a lot of the sweaters are from knitting pattern books. I guess people (women) made them, but few men actually wore them ;-)
The fashions for women were more wearable; I had a Nehru jacket; but I don’t recall a male wearing one in real life.

Ahh those simplicity patterns! My mother and I both sewed many things over the years from those patterns. You could tone down the excesses by picking simpler styles and fabrics. The 70’s were a time of ugly fashion and hairstyles, and I remember disliking them even then. It was a distinct break from the 60’s though, and likewise the 80’s were a relief after the ugly 70’s. Nobody I knew dressed like the pictures in this article - lots of jeans, t-shirts, some body suits (on girls) with bell bottoms, and knit ponchos. It was very much toned down from these pictures. If you watched the blacksploitation movies from that time, you’d see more of these styles. Some kids went for that look too, but more for dances and parties than day to day.
In the 70s, I wore jeans. Sometimes Levi 501, but mostly a cheaper version sold at JCPenny. T-shirts, button down shirts with collars, sneakers. During the late 70s, I mostly switched to cowboy boots. About the only item in the article I owned was a crew neck sweater, and I still have a couple. Sweatshirts. Denim or leather jackets.
Hated bell bottoms, polyester anything, burnt orange and avocado green ANYTHING.
But I lived in Arizona and Utah during that decade, and didn’t have any more desire to travel to the big cities then than I have now. The article pretty much proves there have been stupid dorks hanging around for years...
They really needed to bring back the body suits a few years ago when older and chunkier women were sporting whale tails.
I remember Gunne Sax. Don't think I ever owned anything from them though. My prom dress was a full length green polyester halter dress. Very simple; nothing like the fancy princess-like creations the girls wear now. I also remember the schizophrenic period when midi and maxi lengths were competing. The midis were usually ugly as sin and maxi stuff dragged in the snow and mud.
So true! They were great with the hip-hugger bell bottoms. Very practical and flattering. Not good for muffin tops though!
Other than Chic jeans, they didn’t make jeans that fit females. Any self respecting female wouldn’t be caught dead in a pair of Chic jeans because they showed camel toes. Levis didn’t fit our hips. Wranglers would fit our hips but we’d have to sew darts above the back pockets to make them fit our waists a bit better.
I like that stuff.

I think I still have some of those knitting/crocheting instruction books. Can’t bring myself to throw them out LOL
Back then, as now, most men neither bought nor wore “fashionable” clothing.
