I just NEVER bring up politics with my brother and his family.

But all through 2000-2008 he always brought up Bush and what a terrible person he was.
And all through 2008-2016 he always brought up Obama and how great he was and how awful the hard right (McConnell, Boehner, McCain, Romney) were.

I've spent 16 years just smiling and nodding, avoiding a family fight.

This year, no one mentioned politics at all. Like, for the first time ever. It was nice.

No problem at our Thanksgiving Dinner. Our grandkids participated in surveys at their private schools, and both were told that they were the most conservative students in their classes, Sophomore and Senior.

Our guests donate free time to feed the those in Need at our Local Salvation Army and believe there should be no welfare.

One of our sons makes me look some what moderate. His younger brother is an independent, who hates socialist liberals and the GOPe. He is laughing at all the liberals claiming that they are going to Canada. He asks them why not Mexico.

My wife and DIL despise liberals, who try to make them, their sisters and daughters look helpless and in need of someone like H. Clintoon.

So the basic politics was thank you Lord, for our new president, Donald Trump, Amen!

My brother-in-law is a skilled trades union guy with 20 years in and his uncle is a lawyer who represents that union. He votes (D) ever since he got the job in ‘97 out of some kind of loyalty to his uncle. My sister votes that way too, and all because they both think they’ll always be in his good graces if they do. They never speak out against any Democrat no matter what. So, we were talking about whether the Russians had really manipulated our electoral process and my sister said, “I think he’s an idiot.”. I assumed that she was referring to Putin. Being a guest at her house, I just waited for somebody else to follow it up but it didn’t happen. She knows what I think, so maybe she was really talking about me!

For us, it was a time of healing.

Yeah! Right!

Rubbed their faces in the dirt. Healing? Here;s some carbolic acid.

Actually it was very pleasant. I guess the lefties I know make it a point to stay away from me.

Healing? After they tried to ruin this country the last eight years! I’ll show you healing....

It turned out pretty well for me. I have some die-hard Democrats and young nephews and nieces who are indoctrinated by public schooling and university culture so I was determined to stay away from politics. We got through dinner and the first few bottles of wine okay. Once the desserts were laid out and we hit the harder stuff, the talk turned to President Elect Trump.

Surprisingly, all the older family members, even if they were Democrats, said that Trump should be given a fair chance to show us what we can do. I got the impression that all the mature people were pretty pleased that Trump got in and not Hillary. The young ones needed work though and they started getting shrill and yapping about the "popular vote." I schooled them pretty well on the Electoral College and even the older folk were impressed with the way I laid it out. Even the Bernie-bots agreed that it wouldn't be a good idea for Los Angeles and New York to decide the election for everybody else. Which is what we'd get in a popular election scenario.

It all was pretty civil and nobody got out of hand. The 20-something nieces and nephews were 100% behind Bernie Sanders and had no love for Hillary. Yet they are genuinely scared of Trump because of all they have been told by their professors and the social media circles they hang out in. I learned that there is a Left Wing equivalent to Free Republic and Reddit/r/The_Donald out there and it is pretty huge. All kinds of conspiracies out there on how Trump and Hillary "stole" the election from Bernie. But they seemed to concede that Hillary would have been worse. They do love their Bernie though. They defended him through thick and thin. I don't get the love affair that our young people had - and still have - for Bernie Sanders. He really hit a chord with them.

I have a feeling that if Bernie was the Democrat nominee, this election might have turned out different.

I had hoped to harass my mother over Thanksgiving, she considers herself very liberal, stumped for Obama etc She never liked Hillary... still upset with her since 2008 but really didn’t like Trump. She didn’t vote this election, but I still expected her to rail against Trump.
Instead she told me she was very impressed how hard he fought HILLARY!
She still doesn’t like him, but she’s gone all he’s our president... very disappointing. Politics is not something you are allowed to take personally in our family, so harassing the other side and post electoral gloating is appropriate at get togethers!

"She was clenching her fists and almost yelling "She won the popular vote."

Dan Bongino gave a great analogy about this issue.

In a battle scene from the movie "Braveheart" the British out numbered the Scots by thousands. But strategies and diversions gave the victory to the Scots and caused a British retreat. In projecting the liberal attitude, Bongino said the British could have still claimed victory because they had more soldiers.

Had dinner at wife’s sister’s place (flaming lib). The rest of us are pro-Trump.

So far, politics have not come up. If so, it would probably end the family festive weekend abruptly, so everyone’s holding their fire.

There is some suspicion however, that my sister’s pro-BLM, anti-Trump rants on FB may have gotten her canned at work. But we only talked about that when our hostess was not around.

Two things you could say:

1) "Hillary is such a bad candidate, she couldn't even win an election she won."

2) "Excuse us. We're having man-talk right now. Go clean the dishes."

We went around the table listing the things we were thankful for and President Elect Trump was on everyone’s list. A great night!

There was extra celebration, because two new babies were born into my family this month, both of whom may actually have a shot at a brighter future. If you had asked me 2 years ago, I wouldn’t have had much hope for my baby son having a brighter future in this country.

Earlier this year, we had a huge blowup over politics.

So this time, we plotted, warned and assured we would avoid the topic. It worked.

All Trump at my get together
I avoid the hopeless libs in the family and politely turn down invites
Problem is the ones that are blood are really kind and generous people—the inlaws are the bleeps
At one function years ago of of the dopes called my brother a NAZI
Only his wife my niece getting the bleep out of the house saved him from a real butt kicking

We only had one older guest and she and her 4 children all voted Trump! One of my sons voted for Johnson but said he would have voted Trump if his vote had mattered. (Los Angeles county)

The worst political chasm in our house is my always brilliant and conservative mom, who now suffers from Alzheimer’s. She can’t remember who was running or if we had the election yet and about 10 times a day she laughs uproariously and asks if trump is really running or really won. It gets very old. She cannot learn, so I’ve given up explaining Trump’s campaign and policies to her. When she hears him she agrees he is just what we need, but afterward, she forgets again.

My sister and “mixed-race” brother in-law hosted. I knew I was in for a day of “highbrow” discussion amongst them and their liberal friends, including lots of NYT quotes, and praise for Nicholas Kristof. Each guest was given an index card to write down, anonymously, three things they are thankful for. I wrote, “Donald Trump, Donald Trump, Donald Trump”. The cards were placed in a turkey hat, and before dinner we each had to pick a card and read out loud the three things someone else is thankful for. Well, my brother in-law drew my card... Long story short, I was tagged as the person who “ruined the day”, “wrecked Thanksgiving”, blah, blah blah. It was great.

I have a niece in her mid thirties. We all agreed not to talk politics around her because she’s been a flaming liberal all her life.

She turned to me at dinner and said, “Guess who’s happy that Trump won? Me!”

Apparently she couldn’t take the thought of “that crook Hillary” as president.

I honestly didn’t know what to say!

She practically went crazy. Her face turned beet red. She was clenching her fists and almost yelling "She won the popular vote."

That's nice, but it's a step short of the finish line. You don't get a "do over", we don't change the rules for this "one special case".

We live in a Constitutional Republic, not in a Mobocracy, and the rules are NOT mere suggestions. But in sensitivity towards your sophomoric feelings, here's an official "Hillary! 2016" Second Place trophy.

Our church’s Thanksgiving Eve dinner has normally had everyone give what they are thankful for. To avoid politics, the minister picked three people specifically to say what they were thankful for: church family, general family, new additions / babies / marriages.

Just when my sister turned on the TV to find some background music and the news channel that popped up had Trump on the screen. My 13 years niece blurted out “EWWW YUCK!!!”

With an old Jewish aunt who just WRITHED in pain at even saying that "T-word" won!! ANd then started railing about how Global Warming was going to kill us all, and COWS emit a GAS and that there were too many of them!!

When asked if she used her air-conditioner and car, "yes, of course" and when told that Sheryl Crow said to ONLY use one sheet of toilet paper, she laughed....then told her that Babs Streisand told everyone not to use their clothes dryer, and she said that Babs's maid probably uses a clothes dryer....so we thought she had come to her senses, and then she said..."MIAMI FLOODED, so Global Warming is REAL"!!! My husband and I in unison said..."It was the SUPER MOON....you know, Aunti, that the MOON CONTROLS the tides, right"?? omg.
