Syracuse, N.Y. -- It's been snowing for 38 straight hours in Syracuse, and there's more to come.
The National Weather Service station at Hancock International Airport has been recording snow since 3 a.m. Sunday, when rain switched over to light snow.
From then until 4 p.m. today, at least 18.9 inches of snow has fallen, and Syracuse could get another 4 inches.

Didn’t you have a pre-Thanksgiving storm like this twenty years ago?
Daughter was a freshman that year.
I used to live in Fulton.
I know......
How much did you get?
We’re about three feet here south of the city.
I thought we left all this behind when we moved from Fulton.
I see that Cortland County is still under a storm advisory.
We say the same thing in Michigan abut the weather. Hang in there. We had 70 degrees on Thursday and then it got cold and snow. We only had a couple of inches but it’s still on the ground and still cold all week. you will have a memorable Thanksgiving for sure.
Could be.
They all run together in a blur after a while.
You really don’t keep track. There’s no point.
Only the really significant ones stand out, like the Blizzard of 93.
And one year, which may have been that year, in march, spring had come and it started snowing and by the time it was all over, we had 48 inches of snow in a week to deal with.
Actually, it wasn’t the same year. The Blizzard of ‘93 was a nor’easter. This other event was a lake band that set up and kept passing back and forth over us for a full 8 days and each time it went over us, it dropped about 6 inches of snow.
“It’s been snowing for 38 hours in Syracuse — and we’re at almost 20 inches”
Some people have all the luck!
I saw on the radar that there were lake effect bands setting up from ALL the lakes.
Even Toronto was getting it from a lake band off Lake Huron.
I’ve heard that the Syracuse-Watertown area is one of the snowiest areas in the US not at high elevation. I guess areas of Wisconsin, Minnesota & Buffalo, NY would be in the running for that distinction as well.
Yeah, lucky that all they got was 20 inches.
We’re well over that.
Snow loses it’s novelty after a lifetime of shoveling it.
Freezing temps overnight for the last 2 nights here in southeastern Louisiana. During the day it was 68 yesterday and supposedly 73 today. But then it warms up for the whole week. No more freezing and below at night.
west Michigan gets some pretty heavy lake effect. We are just 20 minutes east of Grand Rapids. We are well prepared for a heavy winter every year. Some years we have wood left over but we never run out.
It’s hard to say because of some drifting, but over 2 feet with drifts higher. Fulton, my home town. Now live half way between Fulton and B’ville.
Do you know if it will stop today? My parents have been in Binghamton since Friday visiting relatives and are supposed to head back to Indiana today in time for Thanksgiving, but I’m wondering if we’re going to have to change our holiday plans on the fly.
And it stopped. Well, enjoy the snow. Feed your chickadees. It is very rural where we are so we feed a lot of wildlife in the winter.
With love from northern Michigan.
Yes, Syracuse is snowier that Buffalo, although Buffalo has the worse reputation, thanks to the Blizzard of ‘77.
Syracuse is at that spot where the air is still just cold enough to make it snow and warm enough to still have a lot of moisture in it from the south.
The closer to freezing the more likelihood of snow.
And then the lake effect is what produces a significant amount of the snow totals. The Syracuse to Watertown area is the prime location for lake effect.
It’s tapering down now.
They should be fine as long as they don’t go north, but leaving from Binghamton, they would just take the Southern Tier Expressway and avoid the lake effect hit area.
That’s all north of where they are.
80-90% of the state got the storm.
About half the state was shut down yesterday.
