I wish I thought our fashionably liberal ruling classes, throughout what remains of the free world, would learn from the election of Donald Trump as President of the United States. But they won't. They are incapable of learning anything, ever.
After years of taunting. spiting. ignoring and scorning the rest of us and our opinions, they have now created a monster, President Trump is entirely their fault. But they blame others.
I have politely warned the liberal elite for years they were taking this risk. I have many times said and written to such people: "Please listen to me now. Or you will end up having to listen to someone much, much nastier in future."......
On they ploughed with their mass immigration, their diversity and equality, their contempt for lifelong, stable marriage, their refusal to punish crime, their mad, idealistic foreign wars, their indulgence of drugs, their scorn for patriotism, their schools and universities, turning out graduates with certificates they can barely read.
And on they went with their destruction of real jobs, promising a new globalized prosperity that never came. Millions have just had too much of this.
Even now the liberals squawk and gibber in a state of disbelief. They hold daft placards saying 'Love Trumps Hate', as if they have not for years hated the secret, inarticulate people, living in parts of the country they never visit and barely know exist, who have finally let rip with a yell of resentment and rage.....
Mr. Trump has so stirred the mob that they cannot be relied on to go home if he fails them.
They want the change and revenge they were promised.
If they see that they will not get them, they will instead rally behind figures who will make Donald Trump look like John Major......

This is Peter Hitchens, whose late brother Chris was an atheist who supported the post 9/11 wars and the policies of GWB.
Peter is a practicing Christian who points to Donald Trump's coarse comments and actions as not befitting high moral standards, but he also expresses his disdain for intolerant liberal elites who created the atmosphere for the "Trump Triumph".
He also expresses fear that if Trump does not deliver leadership he considers worse will emerge in this country.
The mob that is rioting across this country - they are Soros people, not Trump's people. His people don't riot. They believe in private property - and in guns to defend it.
Vicious anti-Trump article.
“He also expresses fear that if Trump does not deliver leadership he considers worse will emerge in this country.”
Obama has never delivered leadership and look what we have. Hitchens can worry about a lot of things with Trump but lack of leadership is not one of them.
Can somebody tell me when Great Britain became the 51st State??? Puerto Rico has never had this many mouthy citizens!
Mr. Hitchens is not describing the people who voted for Mr. Trump. He’s actually describing those in Occupy Wall Street, Black Leves Matter, Acorn and other leftist organizations.
IMHO
Making him out to be Trumpzilla before he even takes office.
He disdains Trump and he disdains the Left in equal measure.
It comes off as moralistic and preachy.
But I have no objection to moral standards that are lived out consistently.
I voted for Donald Trump and I am much more happier than Peter Hitchens.
My concern is that Trump will cave into the Corporatists and carry out the agenda of the elites in the end.
Dr. Martin Luther King was glad to be out of jail because John Kennedy got involved during the 1960 election but he wanted President Kennedy to change things.
Things didn’t change, so King took action.
I would like to see nonviolent protest, civil disobedience if the Left does not give way to Trump or if Trump caves into their demands.
Doubt it.
Strange... Hitchens didn’t once mentioned the bought and sold journalists. How convenient. The ease at which a majority of the people can be controlled thru left wing, propaganda spewing journalists and online giants such as FB and Google. They control what people see, think and believe. Don’t forget to toss in fifty years of liberal indoctrination in our education system. Sets our country up for some pretty big philosophical differences. The battle is just beginning.
If Trump fails, his supporters could well stay home in 2024 out of frustration, giving us President Warren, the first Native American president. If Trump succeeds, history suggests that his supporters are also likely to stay home in 2024 under the assumption that they have put government back in its place, again giving us President Warren (President Chelsea???).
It is important for President Trump to get as much as possible done in the first 100 days and then in the remainder of the first year, before election season starts for Congress. It is even more important for him to make sure that the changes are structural. Eliminate EPA. Eliminate the Department of Education. Eliminate the Department of Energy. Eliminate subsidies from NPR/PBS funding to crony capitalism. Don’t just cut; take those things to zero and remove them from the budget. Completely repeal federal restrictions on our right to keep and bear arms. Require the same state respect for guns and concealed carry permits that are legal in any state that the left required for what they call gay “marriages”.
:: throughout what remains of the free world ::
Peter, you ignorant slut!
Outside of the USA, there is no such thing as a “free world”.
He has to roll like a steamroller, roll like FDR and LBJ, except in a different direction.
“And this campaign has done so much damage to the USA, to its tolerance, to respect for the rule of law, to civility, that there is no telling where this may stop.”
To the contrary, Trump spent much time talking about the rule of law. Trump is civil to civil people and has a record of tolerance.
This Brit has not liberated himself from the Liberal mindset he criticizes as much as he thinks.
This is what liberal hand-wringing looks like.
Christopher Hitchens is dead?
Hm. I didn’t know that.
I wonder if he is still an atheist...
Does Peter live in England? Does he live here, in America?
Not really. He blames the "liberal ruling class" for the rise of a monster like Trump. He has policy disagreements with the elite liberals, but saves his worst criticism for Trump, his policies, and his supporters.
Hitchens says, "I have politely warned the liberal elite for years that they were taking this risk. I have many times said and written to such people: Please listen to me now. Or you will end up having to listen to someone much, much nastier in future."
Hitchens says this about Trump. "This yahoo, this bully, this groper, a man who threatened his opponent with jail, he surely cannot be preparing to live in the White House? Yes, he is."
"I loathe Mr Trump for his coarseness, his crudity, and his scorn for morals, tradition and law. I am as sorry that he has won as they are, and fear that Britain will have its own Trump before long. But I can at least say that I tried to prevent it."
Hitchens is repeating the same narrative as George Will and NR. He is blaming the elite liberals for this cross that we must now all bear. Trump is the albatross we must now wear around all of our necks. And it gets worse,
"If he is what he says he is, and keeps his promises, then he is bound to do grave damage to the peace and stability of the USA."
"The simplest test of that will be whether he tries to put Hillary Clinton in prison, the promise he made that most pleased his supporters. If he does not, then he is like a medieval wizard who has conjured up the Devil and now does not know how to send him back where he came from.
"Mr Trump has so stirred the mob that they cannot be relied on to go home if he fails them."
"They want the change and the revenge they were promised."
"If they see that they will not get them, they will instead rally behind figures who will make Donald Trump look like John Major."
"And this campaign has done so much damage to the USA, to its tolerance, to respect for the rule of law, to civility, that there is no telling where this may stop."
Hitchens is not only attacking Trump, he is attacking us, Trump's supporters. We are the mob. We are the deplorables and irredeemables.
I would like to see nonviolent protest, civil disobedience if the Left does not give way to Trump or if Trump caves into their demands.
Hitchens clearly prefers that Trump act like a traditional politician and not carry out his promises. As I said this is a vicious hit piece cloaked in right wing intellectualism.
IMHO Trump was the lesser evil, but I personally disdain the personality cult of Trump common amongst many here. Much of what he proposes is unconstitutional, and his vulgar attitude to sexual assault is a disgusting flaw. The die hard Trumpest cult followers are the mirror image of the leftards wailing and rioting over their demi goddess Hillary losing the election.
