29 maritime sailors died on this date in 1975. The Great Lakes Shipping Consortium takes time to reflect tomorrow at the Maritime Sailors Cathedral in downtown Detroit. It a shame I cant be there once again:
The Church Bell chimed Till it rang 29 times For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald

But be respectful, as it is a sad remembrance.

I never gave this enough thought until I married a man who spent 20 years working as a commercial fisherman in Maine. Each time we travel to Maine to visit the kids we spend time at one or two of the Memorial sites on the Maine coast. Indeed, this is a somber time of memorial.

If you can, make the effort to attend the Maritime Sailor’s Cathedral on the Detroit river-front in downtown Detroit. They hold a remembrance service for sailors “Lost to the Lakes”, not just the ^Eddy Fitz^.
It is moving if you any connection to the GL maritime shipping industry.

I’ve had a line from that song in my tagline for a couple of weeks.

Oh, very young
What will you leave us this time?
We’re only dancing on this earth
For a short time
You and I need to share a beer!

I think, in addition to the solemn commemoration for the lives lost 41 years ago, this year we have a special occasion for joy:
"The Witch of November come stealin'" was averted on Tuesday night.

I was on foot in downtown Port Huron, Michigan in the summer of 1974 when the drawbridge over the Black River went up. I stood there and after a minute or too the Edmund Fitzgerald rolled past. A companion told me, “That's the biggest ship on the lake right now.” In those days I was bumming around the country and didn't catch a lot of news. The next time I heard about the Edmund Fitzgerald was when Gordan Lightfoot’s song came out two years later.
