I have severe shoulder pain, especially when using either A. an overhand throwing motion or, B. reaching behind my back. I've been to an orthopedic doctor. He did x-rays and said that I did have arthritis. He further examined me and said that I didn't have a torn rotator cuff, tendonitis, or bursitis. He gave me a cortisone shot into one of my shoulder joints that hurt like hell, but did help. I then went to a chiropractor and he suggested that I may have a pinched nerve in my neck. I've been going to therapy with him 3 times a week for 3 weeks now, with no relief whatsoever. OTC pain meds don't help in the slightest, and anything stronger causes me to projectile vomit. I've had this pain since June. I didn't have any kind of injury. I'm 40 years old. Please help.
Stop seeking advice online for medical conditions. We are not doctors although I did stay at a Holiday Inn once.
Find another doctor.
Trust your orthopod Ask for a referral to a specialist in arthritis
First I’d drop the chiropractor.
The doctor said you DID have arthritis?
See if the orthopedic could recommend physical therapy from a licensed physical therapist or a massage therapist. If those routes do not work, perhaps acupuncture or acupressure.
YouTube is your BEST friend. Look around!
How’s the cartilage separating the joint ball and socket? Is the socket in correct alignment? Is there any bone-on-bone contact? Any bone spurs?
Also, cortisone shots will degrade the bone.
What I had sounds identical but who knows. I had xrays and tests and they couldn’t find much and recommended physical therapy. At first I scoffed. But I must say the exercises fixed it. I still run through some of them to stay limber.
Sounds like one or more partially torn tendons in your shoulder. I had pain I would have described as you did.
I got Platelet Enriched Prolotherapy Therapy.
Cured my problem.
I had a pinched nerve in my neck...and few years ago...Hurt like the dickens.....
Tried a bone breaker...helped a little. Was like $35 for 15 minutes,....Found a massage therapist...who was $50 for a good hour. She fixed me....
There is some research in pain management that points to freezing nerves to eliminate pain.
There are pain management specialists who can focus on the relief of pain even if the cause of the pain can’t be resolved.
Have you ruled out rheumatoid arthritis? This would be done by a rheumatologist, with blood work.
Shoulder impingement syndrome perhaps?
I’ll have to try that.
I’m DEFINITELY NOT saying you had one, but having had a stroke at a young age, 37, now 48, the shoulder pain was Brutal afterwords.
I’m JUST SAYING it could be nerve related, not that you had one.
See a neurologist.
And keep hunting until you find an answer.
My pain, though diminished, is likely permanent. Yours isn’t, I think
Upper Cervical Chiropractic has done wonders for me. Conventional ones were so so to OK.
I used to think accupuncture was corny. Skeptic me wound up trying it after some stuff happened. It feels kind of weird but it’s the best rest I get. Apparently it helps a little with snoring too.
Wobezyme, UC II, and a TENS unit.
GET REAL. USE THIS SITE???
It sounds like you had what I had — essentially a pinched nerve in the neck. To properly diagnose:
(1) see Doctor
(2) get X-Ray of shoulder/neck region.
After that, heat apply to the neck and neck exercises (move neck as far to the right and HOLD it for a count of 30), move neck to as far to the left and HOLD for a count of 30 ....
It will clear. Just believe.
Give the “Icy Hot “Smart Relief” tens unit a try.
I have used it several times on my knee, and it works great. The same pad that is for the knee, also fits the shoulder.
Bromelain is a natural anti-inflammatory agent. If you can stop the inflammation whatever is damaged especially if it’s related to a joint will heal faster since tendons do not have a good blood supply. Buy the largest GDU capsules you can find at a vitamin/supplement shop. Do not buy based on Mg. Do not take with food. Take between meals four to six times a day.
Worked for me.
