Samsung Electronics has suspended production of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones following reports of fires in replacement devices, South Korean media said on Monday, a further setback for the tech giant trying to manage its worst ever phone recall crisis.
Samsung's decision to temporarily halt Note 7 production was done in cooperation with authorities in China and the United States, as two U.S. carriers have stopped exchanging or selling new Note 7 phones, Yonhap News Agency cited an unnamed source at a Samsung partner firm as saying.
Samsung did not immediately comment on the Yonhap report.
Problems with replacements for the Note 7 model would create a new and potentially costly chapter to a global scandal which has hurt the reputation of the world's biggest smartphone maker. It also could add new dangers for consumers.
AT&T, the No.2 U.S. wireless carrier, said on Sunday it will stop exchanging new Note 7 smartphones due to reports of fires from replacement devices that Samsung has said used safe batteries.
No.3 wireless carrier T-Mobile US said it was temporarily halting sales of new Note 7s as well as exchanges while Samsung investigated "multiple reports of issues" with its flagship device.

Incredible to me this yuge issue made it throught R & D testing without being found.
Good thing I’m still on 6.
I have s7. No problems.
What’s worse is now they found out that some actually burst into miniature nuclear explosions when used :)
Seriously, I wonder if there will be a time to buy this stock in the future.
Dont know enough about company or balance sheet and how many different items they sell, or the public response.
I dodged a bullet and opted to buy a new Note 4 for $345. Thank God. Note 7 was $857 and a fire hazard.
The prototypes probably didnt have full production run batteries in them.
Also who knows if they were still tweaking the software for charging the batteries.
If they changed how the fast charging works, and or the full production batteries were less robust, there can be lots of,new problems the prototypes would not have had.
There was nothing wrong with my original note 7. Awesome device. Incredible battery life. I loved it. The replacement (that I wouldn’t have bothered with if an update hadn’t all but bricked the original) doesn’t have the spectacular battery life.
That just leaves the iPhone as the go to lighter......
Really don’t you all feel real safe with these lithium batteries everywhere just waiting to ignite?
From phone to car to airplane.
Thermal problems always sink the big companies. What you do not see does not exist? Right? Engineering hidden anomalies bite.
The only competent companies have a real, authentic Engineer at the top eg former HP. Others are run by accountants, business gurus, majority stock holders, trust fund kids. Even Bill Gates Microsoft is run by a college drop out, so it make junk products.
But spending money is fun. Run by ignorance. Until the quality of the product is poor.
Samsung should just admit the Galaxy Note 7 is a fundamentally flawed device, recall them permanently, and either offer a full refund or give them a Galaxy S7 Edge with a free 128 GB Micro SDXC memory card and protective case.
The Note 5 is a great phone. I stick with it a while longer I guess.
I know someone who bought the new note 7. He loved it, but traded it for the replacement. He has trouble with the replacement. I tried to talk him into buying the axon 7 before he bought the note...suggested he look up the specs. He didn’t. Spent 400 more than he needed to.
oh well.
Still nursing a Note 3.
ditto!
How many other phone recall crises has Samsung had?
The good news is that if you are lost in the forest, stranded miles from home, you can use the phone to start a fire.
#14 Thanks. I will look at the ZTE Axon 7. I like those speakers. I never understood why speakers are placed in the back of a phone. Nearly has the same specs as a Samsung S7.
$400 at BestBuy.
