Zume Pizza in Mountain View says it's the only restaurant in the world to have robots making its pizzas. It's the "next generation" in technology. But the CEO says there's no need to fear. "Robots won't be taking away jobs - instead these robots are just being used for squirting and spreading marinara sauce. Zume restaurant still has people who toss the dough and add toppings to the pizza.
What would Clemenza say?
The robots don’t make $15 an hour and they don’t bitch about healthcare, either.
I think this is the leading edge of a very large scale implementation of simple robotics to eliminate the lowest level of human labor - repetitive, mindless tasks that do not require higher order human skills. We’ve all done these jobs at some time - in HS, working to make a buck while in college, etc. I mowed and landscaped at a shopping center the summer between HS and college. Utterly mindless work. While in college I worked a 3rd shift at UPS loading trucks. It paid very well, but was something that today could be mechanized easily.
In food service, taking out the human labor could provide more consistent quality, and reduce risk of contamination.
The $15/hr minimum wage crowd has no clue this is coming down the track. Good phreaking luck!
I hate the way they lie. Yes, it will take away human jobs. Those jobs will be gone. It’s the start of a mass unemployment and there are no solutions to this. Whatever jobs do arise from this technological revolution will not be as numerous as the jobs that are replaced and they wont be as well paid either, because potentially every job will be a step away from automation.
Lame!
All the jobs my son did in high school have gone away also, although some to illegals - full service filing station, golf course maintenance, car washes. Did see a couple of new places where they wash and clean cars by hand lately and cars were in line at both places. Our local CFA now has teens taking orders in the drive thru lane. IMO slows down service but at least more teenagers now have part-time jobs and learning entry level skills.
If robots aren’t taking jobs, then where’s the monetary savings? Or is it just for the novelty and entertainment for the customers.
it wont just end at marinara squirting.
we will get better more consistent food as well.

I had to laugh reading that. This is always how it begins.
Change is often incremental. Today it's squirting sauce. Tomorrow it will be making the dough. The next day...it's suddenly a brave new world.
As long as they still need humans for eating the pizza, I’m in. (Buuuurp!)
That might be true, but how do forever unemployed people pay for it?
But,but, but....robots don’t spit on the pizza
The best pizza place in town closed yesterday. I’ve lived here since 1983 and it was the best ‘za and we have 30-some pizza joints to choose from in this college town. I’m bummed out. What a drag... Oh well.
There is a really good Greek and Italian restaurant that makes fantastic pizza. I think the best fried flounder around too.
Bring back the buggy whips!
Machines could only replace parts of human labour. There still had to be a human somewhere during the process. Now, there could be no human from start to finish. Entire factories are being set up with only a few people involved. There has never been a time like this and nobody knows how it will shake out.
Heh, it’s a long drive from here to there. Just finished an order of fish ‘n chips, but delivered it cost $15 with tip. A little pricey...ah, well, beats going out...
