Central Michigan should give the game back, but it won't happen

STILLWATER — On the corner of Knoblock and Mathews, the southeast exterior of Gallagher-Iba Arena had turned into an impromptu Central Michigan pep rally Saturday. Players, parents and fans partying in the golden Oklahoma afternoon.

Chippewas coach John Bonamego, smoking a victory cigar that seemed bigger than the football Corey Willis carried across the goal line on the play that shouldn't have existed, smiled from ear to ear.

The coach who beat cancer last year had now beaten the 22nd-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys, 30-27. The Chippewas' first victory over a ranked team in a quarter century. Maybe the greatest Central Michigan victory since winning the 1974 Division II national championship.

Wow, Fire Up Chips. This is probably the major highlight of the College Football Weekend.

Had to post this, especially since I partied hard while a student at CMU when we won that 1974 Championship.

To paraphrase that old saying: "Honor is the last refuge..." From the article: "I hope Bonamego knows what he ought to do. I hope he knows he ought to give the game back; ought to stand up and say as much as the Chippewas were thrilled by the victory, their honor means more."

To take that comment one step further, every time there is a bad call the benefited team should honorably turn down the call. But at least the author did acknowledge: "OU or OSU won't do it if ever given the chance."

What does this have to do with conservative activism?

More whining over a worthless football game.

If the official makes a mistake how is that the responsibility of the winning team?

A comment from another story was that this is basically like a team that hurries and runs a play to keep the last call from being reviewed. Once the play is run, the call stands.

So in this case, regardless whether the refs were correct, a subsequent play was run and therefore becomes part of the game, in this case a CMU win.

If the University of North Dakota was told that they had to give up the name Fighting Sioux, why is Central Michigan University allowed to call its team the Chippewas?

And shouldn't they be called Ojibways anyway?

Because the Chips have a great relationship with the Chippewa Tribe and have the Tribe’s support.

Not like that Politically Correct Yipsie School that changed their name from the Hurons to the Falcons.

“This mutual relationship also is evident in the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Council’s continued support of Central Michigan University’s “Chippewas” nickname, which the university uses as a sign of pride, honor and respect for the tribe’s rich heritage.”
