GREENSBORO, NC -- Are some Walmarts "better” than others?
We're talking good customer service. Clean stores. Stocked shelves. Short check-out times. According to a new study, yes.
Andy Reich, a Columbia University Assistant Professor of Sociology says his study has revealed not all Walmarts are created equal.
To simplify his findings, he says, White and rich neighborhoods have better Walmarts than Black and poor neighborhoods.
“People used words like ‘unorganized’, ‘nasty’ and ‘worst’ to describe stores in communities of color much more than they used those words to describe Walmarts in Whiter communities,” Reich said in a Skype interview.
He says he analyzed 35,000 Yelp reviews across 28-hundred Walmart stores in the U.S. He then used those keywords and matched them with the reviewers' race and neighborhood they live in. The data was collected between 2004 and 2015.

So this is based on subjective observations, not actual unbiased researchers going into the Walmart using a validated tool to capture data.

When larger cities started to install bus stops at suburban shopping malls, these malls became hangouts for the inner-city yutes and the malls eventually went out of business because few suburban folks would shop there anymore.
There are abandoned shopping malls all over America.

Nastiest Walmart Supercenter I ever shopped in was in Irving, Texas. I was the only white face in the store, including the employees. Mostly brown, with some black.
The one I usually shop in is much nicer, even though it is largely Mexican and Asian, with a sprinkle of salt and pepper. There’s another Supercenter for whites about 3 miles down the street for whites. It’s really nice.
My experience would support the conclusions of the article that whites keep their stores nicer than do folks of darker skin tones.

I noticed a similar trait at Burger King once. Black customers could be counted on the leave their table unbussed while whites returned their trays and dumped their litter into the trash receptacles. Blacks have a corner on the “let someone else do it” market while bitching at how they’re perceived.
I was on a road trip a few months ago taking my Polish girlfriend down to Yosemite. I needed to get some camping supplies. Stopped at a Walmart on the outskirts of Fresno. GOOD GOD!!! Got the hell out of there FAST!!! Drove a few miles to a smaller town called Clovis and stopped in that store. Clean and orderly with no little children destroying the place and riding bikes and skateboards up and down the aisles. I did not need to embrace the diversity.
This is what passes for "science" in Sociology: take some kind of survey (no matter how ridiculous), reach a conclusion. Don't bother to identify confounding variables or alternate hypotheses.
And, if it fits the narrative, so much the better.
I would say that for the most part it is the clientele. They have no care, they have no courtesy. They drop things and don’t pick them up. If there is something on the floor they run over it....
Okay, in Columbus, Georgia, the biggest Walmart has outdoor Coke machines for 50 cents a can for name-brand soda, It sports a free blood pressure machine, and an indoor McDonald’s. The newer Wal-Mart on downscale Victory Drive has none of those things. Besides the danger of outdoor soda machines, the Victory Drive Wal-Mart does NOT have to compete with a nearby Kohl’s, Target or shopping malls. It’s Wal-Mart vs. CVS and Piggly Wiggly, which is not much of a match up for most items.
