Penn State's student-run newspaper is objecting to the university's plans to honor the 50th anniversary of former head coach Joe Paterno's first game later this month.
The Daily Collegian's Friday editorial says Penn State "needs a reality check."
The editorial says undergraduates know Paterno only through the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal, court fights or alumni who "can't accept" that their time is past.

Who would have thought that Paterno was a bigger POS than Bobby Bowden?...
Jock sniffing scumbag ping!
Paterno is a scapegoat for the PSU Administration who should have been responsible for Sandusky. It is ridiculous to say that an 80 year old football coach is responsible for the HR of a major state university. As much as the university milked Paterno for all the fame and money he brought to the school, its crazy to say that he should not have been supported with an administration team to make sure that everything off the field was managed properly.
There are lots of examples of football coaches, even very popular ones having failings in other areas. And besides he was one year from an announced retirement.
Bullcrap. He supposedly knew every damn detail about that program. He had more power than the school administrators. He turned a blind eye to his pervert assistant.
No respect for the old fool. not taking action on that one thing ruins everything else he did. Disgusting to support him.
This has nothing to do with HR. This was a criminal matter, and he could have called the police at any time.
what went on was serious business. a career ender...covering for it is also a career ender. paterno should have known this. his failure to handle the situation when he became aware of it is costing him. sad, but it has to be what it has to be.
This is the biggest pant load of whitewash I ever read about Ped State.
FlStJoePa?
...except that the 80 year old football coach was Joe Patern who made it pretty clear to the University president that he wasn’t leaving any way except feet-first and 2 successive attempts to get him to retire failed. No. Joe was the 800 lb gorilla at PSU, not just the athetic dept or the football program.
The deference shown to Joe is what caused the non-supervision of the football program and it’s hangers on, like Jerry Sandusky.
I suspect Joe wasn’t equipped to understand what was going on. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t bear any reponsibility for what happened.
I tend to blame the athletic department. This was the cew that ran women’s basketball coach Rene Portland out of town after some accusations from a disgruntled lesbian basketball player. They were plenty pro-active when they wanted to be.
” suspect Joe wasnt equipped to understand what was going on. But that doesnt mean he doesnt bear any reponsibility for what happened”
Yours is the most reasonable explanation I’ve seen on these threads.
“It is ridiculous to say that an 80 year old football coach is responsible for the HR of a major state university.”
Thanks for bringing insight and clarity to the Parerno issue, it is news to everyone that Paterno was an 80 year old football coach for 40 years.
If he was equipped with a brain, he was equipped to understand what was going on.
Paterno?? He knew He let the big donors get what they wanted and closed his eyes, ears and mouth while Sandusky supplied boys to them.
Someone needs to explain that student newspapers matter to no one, except those who publish it.
It’s too bad that we didn’t get to see Joe in prison jammies. That would have been perfect.
He was told what was going on. He pretended it wasn’t happening.
There was boys being supplied to the big pedophile donors. He had to know. He did know. Stop coddling his memory. He got what he deserved. Infamy.
He was 70 when Sandusky was first accused. And Paterno informed the administration at the first accusation. Sandusky ran a large children’s charity in town with Judge’s and virtually all the elite of middle Pennsylvania behind him. The authorities that were supposed to be watching Sandusky were vast and did not include the head football coach.
